The before ~

January 23rd, 2009 by Sarah

Very much not a fan of over-head fluorescent lighting. That is being addressed. Fortunately there is a very nice South facing window = very good light in the afternoon.

Scared, exceedingly excited and a smidge overwhelmed (but totally in a good way, of course). That’s me, in a nutshell, this week. I signed a lease on a DYE STUDIO (sadly, the studio at my Dad’s workshop just wasn’t working out and was more than 20 miles from my house – this new studio is only four miles from home).

Do you know what this means? It means, of course, more yarn. But, also, slightly larger dye runs, several more bases, capability to do more yarn shows (which means I get to see all of you, face-to-face. How cool is that?!??!) and, well, the creative juices are about to over-flow I’m so excited!

This space will be 99.9% dedicated to being a dye studio. However, it’s in the works to have a “Sit N Knit” twice a month (I’m thinking Friday afternoon/ evenings – but that’s flexible. Maybe one Friday and/or one Monday or Saturday. But, twice a month for sure). And, most definitely, there will be an open-house. For those of you not in the area I’ll have a “virtual open-house” and for those that want to make the trek…. fantastic!!! I’ll get to see you in person and there will be sweet and savory treats, comfy chairs, coffee and drinks and yarn, always the yarn.

Definitely more news to come. But, If you’ll excuse me, I have a lot of yarn to move, a stove to have installed, walls to paint, and, well just get organized. I promise, I’ll document the entire process to share with all of you. After all, it’s because of you that I am able to do this – I can’t thank you enough…. just can’t.

In the meantime, here’s a few pics to keep you updated:

Sam and Elmer T checking out the new digs. They approve.

Bob, checking out the new plumbing.

Dad brought me a sink. Heaps of yarn that thing will hold!

Keep me away from the hex wrenches and tools. Not a good combo. Brother-In-Law #3 dropped by to fix my mistake(s). Thanks Dan.

Elmer T and a new obsession. I feel another restoration coming on.

Lash Envy ~

January 18th, 2009 by Sarah

A couple of weeks ago we went to my sisters for dinner. Knowing you love food/recipes as much as I do,   I’ve been meaning to share some pictures and recipes of a must-make salad and dessert.

My sister, she sets a pretty table.

Pomegranate – so messy but sooooo good.

Herman Heimer (or Herm for short. That was her nickname, growing up. She’ll love me for posting that) she makes over-the-top, fantastic salads. Warm Wilted Winter Salad.

The market was out of escarole and radicchio, but any hearty, leafy lettuce will do (as the dressing is served warm thus rendering a more delicate lettuce very, very wilt-y).

I make the dessert – it’s my thing. Yogurt Lemon Cake. Make it. You’ll be glad you did.

Total lash envy. Is it just me or do little boys always get the most gorgeous eyelashes?

5 Degrees ~

January 15th, 2009 by Sarah

If I can get some good lighting today I’ll see about getting a picture of the cowl laid out flat (No problem Carrie).

Any soft and squishy aran or worsted weight yarn will do (I used TPK Aran Cashmere, colorway: Doris). You may be surprised to know, but I keep next to none of my yarn…. with all the nasty weather and lack of sun I wanted something bright. So, I thought it time to swipe a few skeins for me (shhh – don’t tell Mr. Plucky).

With yarn held double, cast on 73 stitches (I got approximately 3” per inch on a size 17 needle) and knit until I ran out of yarn. It’s a little over 10” inches from cast on to cast off edge.

Knit the first five rows. Next row – yo, k2tog, end with a k1. Knit another 3 rows and then the yo, k2tog, end k1 row again. Alternated these rows for the duration of the knit (I’m wearing it doubled around my neck. In my opinion, a cowl can’t be tight enough – especially when it’s FIVE degrees outside!).

Warm and drapey and just the ticket for this time of year. And speedy. Very speedy. From cast-on to cast-off was less than 2 hours. And, truth be told, even though I love to wear scarves (and wear them all the time I do) there are many things I’d rather knit besides a scarf. So, this fits the bill perfectly.

It’s similar to some neck warmers I knit last winter, but really, they are just so functional, fun, fast and cozy. What’s not to like?

In other news – It’s official, I will be a vendor at Madison Knitters Guild on Saturday, March 14th. I’m thrilled (and slightly overwhelmed, but that is a story for another day). If you will be attending, please be sure to stop by and say Hi – I’d love to meet you!

The price I pay for having him help me with pictures. Ah well, he’s very entertaining.
