Ask Plucky ~ A Give Away

By | August 13, 2008

Can you believe it is almost the middle of August already? This summer is flying by! Have you had a good summer? So, tell, what’s been  the highlight of your  summer?

Do you have a question about yarn bases? Colorways? Finished objects?  Couldn’t really care less about about fiber related items, but have other questions? Well, don’t let that stop you, now’s your chance, ask away.

So, if you have questions or suggestions (maybe there is there something you would love to see offered in  the shop, etc.), leave me a comment and then at a later date I will do a post with the questions  along with the  answers. Ask away. I’ll be picking a random question (using the randsom number generator – random.org –  to pick a winner. What will you get?  One of my  new Are You A Plucky Knitter tote).

Lastly, there will be a  shop update tomorrow night, Thursday, August 14th at 9:00 p.m. EST.

Well, um, I have a tote so please don’t enter me into the contest…I want someone that doesn’t have one already to get one…BUT can I still ask a question? Hmmmm…this is kinda hard cause you know…we have some history…..but oh, okay, got one…

If your name wasn’t Sarah, what would you want it to be?

Rachel on August 13, 2008 at 8:50 pm.

Hmmm, questions, okay, from start to finish, how long does it take to dye up a skein of yarn? Just curious!

diane on August 13, 2008 at 8:54 pm.

I would love a Plucky Tote to carry all the lovely yarn I have bought this summer(WINTER down here) but I can’t think of any questions. Except how do you come up with the names for your colors ? Do you dye to fit a name or the name emerges from the color?

Kari on August 13, 2008 at 9:15 pm.

Ooooh! I need a Plucky Tote too! To carry around during the Knit & Crochet Show in Portland Oregon Sept 11 – 14! I’ll be a walking Plucky Ad! ;)

Here’s my question:

What colors do you gravitate towards most when dyeing? Personally, I LOVE those browns, but that’s just my addiction to chocolate showing.

moonlitbeach on August 13, 2008 at 9:28 pm.

What happens to the yarn that doesn’t come out the way you planned? Do you make cushiony forts out of it and snuggle inside with Mr. Plucky eating ice cream in your pajamas?

goldengirls on August 13, 2008 at 9:36 pm.

The picture of the flower is lovely. What kind of camera do you use?

mick on August 13, 2008 at 9:36 pm.

I’m curious about dyeing. Do you use the colors that the dye comes in, or do you custom mix everything, or do you do a bit of both?

Heather on August 13, 2008 at 9:46 pm.

I love your yarns; I found them browsing around Ravelry. My question is, What is your creative process for deciding on color combinations? Also, will you be making more Merino Bulky soon? I hope so. :)

Thanks for entering me in your contest!

Patty on August 13, 2008 at 10:21 pm.

Sarah, I just found your yarn on Ravelry, and fell in love with your colors! I was so happy to see that you do bulky weight, and can’t wait to buy some when it becomes available.
My question is this,
“What is your inspiration for the colors you create? And, I also wondered how you choose what type of yarn to match with the color?”
Thanks so much!

Stacey on August 13, 2008 at 11:06 pm.

How did you decide which characters to use in the first installment of The Plucky Classics Club? And how did you know that Captain Wentworth is one of my favorites? :)

kai on August 14, 2008 at 3:16 am.

I love your yarns, but as you have lots of questions about yarn already, I’ll ask you this:

What makes you click the shutter on the camera? Do you ‘see’ an image/photo before clicking?

Love the piccies…

Bridgfet on August 14, 2008 at 5:43 am.

One of my friends (iknit on Ravelry) knit a gorgeous pair of Hedgerow socks using your yarn. Then another friend loved them so much she bought 9 skeins of your sock yarn a couple of weeks ago. I love love love the Bird on the Wing colorway.
Do you do repeat colors or custom orders?

Renee on August 14, 2008 at 6:07 am.

Hello Sarah, my name is Renee and I’m a Plucky Yarn Addict… Will your bulky yarns be available in bigger runs of the same colorways for us to make larger projects? Thanks for holding a contest!

Chrissy on August 14, 2008 at 7:27 am.

Ooo, me me. My plucky collection is growing and I need a tote to take pics and post on Ravelry!

My question is how do you sell all of your gorgeous yarns? I would want to keep them all if I had your talent! :)

mai on August 14, 2008 at 8:32 am.

you’re so cute! i don’t have any questions for you, but i’m looking forward to what everyone else asks.

Rachel on August 14, 2008 at 8:47 am.

I do love the Plucky tote. Just discovered you recently, but I already have quite a stash – I just can’t seem to help myself when I see your gorgeous colorways! It would all look so cute snuggled up in the tote, and you KNOW I’d need a few more skeins to fill it up. :)

Question: How did you get started with dyeing yarn?

nicole on August 14, 2008 at 9:27 am.

I’m new to your blog and yarns , I think it’s all so wonderful! My question is why “Plucky” ?? (Maybe you’ve mentioned it and I didn’t get back that far!) Thanks !

Indiecita on August 14, 2008 at 9:38 am.

Hi Sarah,

Ooh I managed to catch one of your contests…leaving on vacation in five minutes, but this is *much* more important. Okay, the best I can come up with with hubby yelling at me to hurry up is, do you have to think about color theory much when you’re dyeing, or do you just sort of play around and go for it.

Back on the 24th – so sorry to miss the shop update! xoxo

Alicia on August 14, 2008 at 11:05 am.

Hi Sarah! I continue to be such a huge fan of yours and your gorgeous yarns. :-) I have a couple of questions for you…

Which is your favorite of the base yarns to dye?
Will you be repeating any of the favorite/most popular colorways from the past?
And a bit more personal…What do you think is the most valuable life lesson you have learned?

Jenn on August 14, 2008 at 11:26 am.

Sarah… I love that pic of the Sunflower!!! Is it in your yard? How is everything? Miss you:)

Liesl on August 14, 2008 at 11:50 am.

Hey Sarah, my question was going to be when can we expect to see the return of Merino Worsted weight in your shop, but you answered that with your last post!

Lauren on August 14, 2008 at 12:20 pm.

Someone beat me to the post! I was also going to ask what type of camera you use – I LOVE your photos! So, I’ll ask another. Have you ever created a colorway and then really disliked it?

Nicole on August 14, 2008 at 2:05 pm.

What is your favorite Hitchcock movie? PS I AM IN LOVE with the Madeline Elster

Robin on August 14, 2008 at 3:20 pm.

My question is: Why are you keeping two Plucky shops? One on Etsy and the other by itself. I always get confused where to look and I missed the last update of awesome yarn!

Christine on August 14, 2008 at 3:45 pm.

Sarah – I’m hoping I have better luck tonight! I know that you listen to books driving, and/or dyeing, what’s your most recent enjoyable listen/read?

Nicole on August 14, 2008 at 4:51 pm.

Several of my questions have been asked already, but I’ve thought of another one. Is your Plucky business so large that you are ready to take on some help and pay them in yarn? HINT! HINT!

Yvonne on August 14, 2008 at 5:30 pm.

How is your new studio working out for you? Can we see it? What does Mr. Plucky think of us crazy yarn ladies? What is your favorite kind of needles? Gee, sorry, I’m terribly nosey today.

Helena on August 14, 2008 at 6:23 pm.

My question is how do you pick the Plucky Classic themes every three months? Do you have a million ideas and have a hard time narrowing it down to just one?

Theo on August 14, 2008 at 6:29 pm.

What content yarn is your favorite to dye – cashmere? angora? any particular type of wool – BFL?

Rosa on August 14, 2008 at 6:54 pm.

How often do you keep a dyed-up skein for yourself because you love the color(s) so much?

kristin on August 14, 2008 at 6:59 pm.

ok. so i’m totally a wanna-be knitter and i was thinking that i would like to buy some goodies from your shop. i drool every time i see your stuff, and i’m totally clueless as to what would be best for a project. for example- if i were to make fingerless gloves- which yarn would your recommend to use. i like super soft stuff. :)

Marsha on August 14, 2008 at 10:21 pm.

Ok, well I missed the update AGAIN!! I was really hoping for some merino worsted – the single ply – but it doesn’t look like you had any. I made the most yummy YH 1 row scarf and some crocheted finglerless mitts (my own made up design) with the last I got. So I guess my question is when will you have the merino worsted again?

Chris on August 14, 2008 at 11:26 pm.

The yarn always smells so nice and feels so soft-do you use a special rinse?plucky tote sounds lovely!

Rae-Ann on August 15, 2008 at 6:32 am.

I do not have any of your yarn because I can’t manage to catch your updates. How addicted will I become one I can actually knitwith your yarn?

kristin on August 15, 2008 at 9:08 am.

how did i miss the update? what?! it isn’t even lasting 24 hours anymore. you are talented!

Kirsten on August 15, 2008 at 3:54 pm.

Do you have any background in art or color theory?

Marilyn on August 15, 2008 at 5:35 pm.

I was watching you update the shop last night and still could not get in fast enough to buy. What’s a girl to do?

Aren't-i-pretty on August 16, 2008 at 3:58 pm.

Dear Mrs. Plucky,
I have a random question. I’ve been wondering about this for awhile. So here we go, why is it that the menfolk always beat the womenfolk at trivial pursuit?

Toodles,
ME

Suzanne on August 16, 2008 at 4:41 pm.

Where did you learn to spin such beautiful yarn? And is your dad ever gonna sell that beautiful green truck? Okay, I’m sure not his word for that awesome truck :)

Cheryl on August 16, 2008 at 4:51 pm.

Who names the colors of your yarn? Do you ever keep a skein of yarn that turns out especially lovely to yourself? Like, do you get attached to it?

LaurenAnne on August 16, 2008 at 6:36 pm.

How is your new dyeing area working out? Everything you hoped for? Thanks for having a contest!

mfrey on August 16, 2008 at 6:50 pm.

forget the yarn questions,i’d be
writing a book.
my favorite moment of the summer was having a surprise visit, with plucky standing at the counter of my art shop!!!!

Jodi on August 16, 2008 at 8:46 pm.

Two questions for my favorite dyer:

Will you be at Michigan Lamb and Wool this year?

Any chance you’ll bring back the single ply merino worsted weight? It’s so squishy and yummy, and I love that the yardage is ample.

Jeanette on August 17, 2008 at 11:00 pm.

What is your biggest challenge in running your yarn business?

Cynthia on August 18, 2008 at 8:10 am.

How did you learn how to dye yarn? How long have you been dyeing yarn?

Tracy on August 18, 2008 at 8:53 am.

I have been with you at a few retail therapy opportunities, why do you buy yarn? Why not use all the beautiful Plucky yarn sitting around the quaint cottage home?

Stacey on August 18, 2008 at 2:50 pm.

I have the same camera – here’s my question…:) What three lenses do you have? I feel like I have a long way to grow into this camera as a total novice and I hear people talking about Macro – I need to figure out what THAT is:) Thanks! btw, have been loving your latest semi-solids!
