You Pick It, You Knit It~
By Sarah | June 12, 2008

First full skein of handspun.
I’ve now knit five sweaters. Four adult (the first of which was significantly too large, the second one landed in Plucky Girls hands and the third, well, there was a raglan issue, the fourth, the bind off was too tight – I’ll eventually get around to fixing that) and two baby sweaters. While following a pattern doesn’t intimidate me in the slightest (really, it’s just like reading a map) it’s the whole…. what size do I make? Is that really my gauge? Let me measure for the 10,000th time….
Which brings me to – my LYS has a class on Friday mornings called You Pick It, You Knit It. Sounds pretty perfect for the gun shy sweater knitter. I just need someone to point me in the right direction. And, because I’ve been so obsessed with knitting a wearable sweater, I have quite a Q built up. Help me narrow it down, pretty please?
Should I knit:
- February Sweater - Simply gorgeous!
- Francsis - Perfect for a Michigan Fall & Winter
- Asymetrical Cabled Cardi - so cute!
- Marilyn’s Not So Shrunken - I have the yarn for this
Or, am I totally missing a great pattern that I should be knitting? Suggestions? Recommendations?
On another note, I will be opening up a few spots in Plucky Classics for the next three month round. The spots will open in the next couple days. I will give a heads up before posting.

Hitchcock Heroines it is!

Those first two are already in my queue but that third sweater is great! I vote for that
Though the Francis sweater is possibly more wearable?

I am so HAPPY! Hitchcock heroines, what a great idea. I love all the movies but my absolute favorite is one I saw almost 15 years ago and still love to this day Vertigo. It is my absolute fave. By the way beautiful handspun

i like them all, but i totally see you in francis revisited. that class sounds like fun! i hardly ever knit swatches or measure gauge, so i never worry too much about size, haha. perhaps i should…

I think you should do Marilyn because you’ve wanted to knit her forever…I mean FOREVER…and you already have the yarn in your stash.

I vote for Francsis. It’s my favorite of the 4 shown. I just downloaded it for myself to make sometime. Thanks for the link!
I chose it for you because “The pattern is worked in the round with virtually no seaming. Top-down construction allows you to try on Francis as you progress to make sure you are getting the fit you want.” Yes! No seaming which is my least favorite part. Loose fit gives you some room in the gauge depatment too.

Gorgeous handspun! My vote is for the February Lady Sweater. Can’t wait for Hitchcock Heroines also!

I vote the February Lady Sweater! It’s gorgeous and I’ve just taken the plunge and started one.

My vote is also for the February Lady sweater. I looove that pattern and I think you would look too cute in it.
Lovely handspun.

Oooh, I love Francis and the Asymmetrical Cabled Cardigan. Thanks for the link on the second one–I just added it to my (always growing and never shrinking) queue.

My votes are 1, 3, or 4…because I have the yarn to make all three!
But right now I’m pretty smitten’ with the February sweater.

I really like Francis or the Asymmetrical Cabled Cardi! Either looks very classy and the construction looks pretty simple too.
You might have openings in the Plucky Classics, please let me know if you do. I tried to find a link in the side bar to the Plucky Classics, but I couldn’t seem to locate anything.

I also vote for the Feb Lady Sweater. The first sweater I knit was the EZ baby version and I loved it and the sweater turned out great! Now you have me wanting to do this – just queued it up!

My vote is also for the February sweater…I added it to my own “Q”.
Yay for the Hitchcock Heronines…I can’t wait to see what they inspire you to create!!

Yes, I think that is THE toughest part about beginning a project….what size to make?!! The class sounds just perfect! Of course, the hardest thing before deciding what size is what pattern? there are too many good options out there! I really like the Francis sweater…so simple and really wearable…if you’re content with stockingette stitch the whole time (I’m one of those who LOVES stockingette stitch). I think stockingette makes it easier to see what you’re doing too. It may be hard to knit this one over the summer as well. If you think you’re up for more of a challenge then I’d go with February Sweater. From experience, I think the pattern for Asymmetrical Cardi might give you trouble…she was a bit vauge in some parts of it. I love all of the sweaters you listed though so good luck and I can’t wait to see what you choose!

Love your new yarn!!!
I vote for the February sweater. It’s just so cute. My second choice is Marilyn. Heck, no matter what you pick, just have lots of fun in the class!

Definitely the Asymetrical Cabled Cardigan!!!!
P.S. Love your blog

I vote for the February Lady sweater! I’ll live vicariously through you while I wait to purchase the yarn to make it myself…:)
Liesl on June 12, 2008 at 7:34 pm.
I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them, but the February Lady Sweater is super cute.
Stacey on June 12, 2008 at 7:54 pm.
I vote February sweater – cause I want one:)
Dawn on June 12, 2008 at 8:51 pm.
I really like the february lady sweater, or the not so shrunken cardi. I want to make both!
sharon on June 12, 2008 at 9:35 pm.
I like February or Francis. Very nice.
Kathy on June 12, 2008 at 9:50 pm.
Gorgeous handspun! Ok, I vote for the February Lady Sweater, simply because there’s a group on Ravelry, which I just joined. What better way to knit a sweater that fits than by participating in a group that can help? I’m casting on tonight!
Sheila B on June 13, 2008 at 10:50 am.
Francis and February get my votes. . .thinking about knitting the former–in pewter-tone mohair that I bought at last year’s Sheep and Wool in Maryland. Swatching a Must! You are a great Sweater Editor, oh Plucky Princess!
Elise on June 13, 2008 at 10:56 am.
I like the February sweater or the Asymmetrical sweater. Another suggestion is Flair by Wendy Bernard (sp)
liz on June 13, 2008 at 2:31 pm.
They are all really beautiful but I’m voting for Marilyn because you have the yarn for it already. And I’d like to stash-bust vicariously through you!
Now, I’m off to wind up some more Plucky yarn for another cowl! Lake Oliver BFL/Alpaca, here I come!
catsnrabbits on June 13, 2008 at 5:27 pm.
Just another thought regarding the Plucky Classics spaces. Perhaps it would be a good idea to take names of the interested and use you random number generator to choose.

Oh, Sarah, I see the Francis on you, but I also like the February.
Regina on June 14, 2008 at 6:57 am.
Five sweaters!! I attempted a baby sweater and just last week unraveled it. I am thinking small again, I just keep losing my nerve to try one for myself.
Marisol on June 16, 2008 at 12:53 pm.
What gorgeous handspun! Man I hope to someday make some of my own yarn–I would be so happy if it turned out like that:)
As for your next sweater I think you should go for the not so shrunken sweater –hey its in your stash:)
Knitterella on June 17, 2008 at 8:39 am.
That handspun is awesome! and so are all your picks for the next project you cast-on for. Thanks for the links!

I vote Francsis. It definitely looks like you. We met at Madrona where I fell in all kinds of love with your yarn. I’m in the same sitch. I’ve been successful lately with Ruth’s Top Down and some cheap commercial Merino but I’m keeping my eyes open for some Plucky worsted… Now to finish an actual sleeved sweater….Hmmm.. I’ll keep you posted.
