Scavenger Hunt ~

April 7th, 2008 by Sarah

I’m not the only one with a  hobby(s) in my family. My Dad (they call him Elmer T…. which is a very funny story I’ll have to share sometime), he’s pretty crafty himself. No. Crafty doesn’t do him justice.  He’s down right genius with all things metal, steel, ironwork… you name it, he does it. And does it beautifully. People come far and wide to have my Dad make and refurbish things for them. He’s working on a project right now (it’s this close to completion) and he needs  just one last part.

This is the part he currently has, which cannot be used, as it has too much rust. This is where you come in – I feel like having a contest. Anyone care to venture a guess as to what this is? Entries can be made until midnight EST, Tuesday, April 8. Don’t worry if you don’t know exactly what it is…. just give it a try.

Then, when all entries are received I will post as to what this is….. and then maybe, just maybe  we can help Elmer T. find one.

 Here’s another hint.

As a group,  I find knitters (let’s include  those that crochet too, shall we?) to be a helpful, generous,  curious, quirky, knowledgeable  and  giving group of people.    I would love to see if anyone can even begin to guess what this might be. Go ahead. Get creative. The person(s) with the closest guess wins their choice of:

  • Skein of Plucky Yarn
  • Charade and remaining Yarntini Cherry Cordial to knit the other sock with (this is a great sock guys…. I just knit it too short for my size 10). Would fit a size 7.5 to 9 perfectly. I just don’t have the heart to rip it out and start over.

I’ve been dyeing. It’s a bumper crop, actually… New base yarns, new colors – all fresh from the pot:

Shropshire – Merino Bulky

Caroline’s Hat – Merino Superwash… WORSTED!!!

Maizy Day – Merino Cashmere DK

Wickham – Merino Superwash Worsted

Down With Love – Merino Superwash Worsted

These and many, many more will be available at the next update. Oh. You’d probably like to know when that will occur? Wednesday evening – 8:00 p.m. EST.

As for Lu – She and I are kaput. Any takers…. anyone?

One more thing. If you haven’t heard, please head over to Fricknits  and  see what’s going on  - you’ll be glad you did.

Lu wants me. She does. ;)

As far as what the heck that thing is that your daddy is refurbishing…hmmm….my best guess is…some sort of windshield. I’m probably so far off…

Love the new yarns. Esp Wickham. Yummmmmmy!

  2. Jennifer Says:

I think it’s a windshield of some sort. Maybe from an old car.

  3. Kate Says:

It looks like a windshield to me! How handy to have a handy dad.

Also, your cashmere DK has the most gorgeous yellows – it’s making me dream of the daffodils that should be arriving any day here in Boston.

  4. mai Says:

it looks like the frame to an old windshield. maybe for an old truck?

  5. Jami Maloney Says:

It looks like either a windshield, or possible rear split window from an old sports car.

  6. Macoco Says:

It looks like a windshield from an old sports boat to me.

  7. Helena Says:

It looks like a windshield to me. From a tractor or maybe an old jeep.

Can’t wait for the update! I hope there’s some sock yarn included!

  8. britt Says:

it looks like a windshield either from a boat or a small airplane, but I am probably way off.

  9. christine Says:

It totally looks like a windshield, but that’s what everyone is guessing, so I’m goig to say the frame of a chair.

  10. Mindy Says:

how about a lawn chair base….seems everyone has an idea so i’m gonna be crazy and list that.

  11. Steve Says:

I think it is a window frame for one of those big tanks that are behind those bars where they have mermaids swimming.

    p.s. I’m loving the Shropshire.

  12. Meadow Says:

I thought right off the bat “that looks like the windshield from mom’s old truck” she had a 1952 Ford pick up truck, loved that truck!! Too bad my dad didn’t have time to restore it so he sold it to someone that did :(

  13. Kirsten Says:

Those are some beautiful colors! But your yarns always are gorgeous!
I too think it’s a frame for an old truck windshield.

  14. Mandy Says:

I’m thinking it’s a windshield, either from an airplane or an old car.

  15. Chrissy Says:

It is definitely a windshield for a vintage truck.

Will be stalking your update at 8 pm! It is all gorgeous!

  16. Michelle Says:

    Oooh, that yarn looks yummy!!

It’s so awesome that you have a crafty dad!

I think it’s a windshield too, but it’s kinda small. So maybe it’s the back window out of a pick-up truck.

  17. Denise Says:

I think it was once a windshield to an old car/truck (I see I’m not the only one that is thinking that) but that’s what came to mind then when I saw the second clue, it looks to be a piece of broken glass left in it – so that’s what I’m sticking with ;-)
Love all that yummy yarn. And if I don’t win anything, I shall console myself with the fact that I have your Plucky Classic to come sometime this month :)

  18. mick Says:

It looks like a windshield to me.

    Pretty yarn!

  19. chrispy Says:

It is for sure an old windshield for an older vehicle. My FIL would know right away what make and an approximate year, but then he has 5-6 classic cars ranging from model A to old school Z car. This weekend I got dragged to the Portland Car Swap. There might have been the exact windshield you needed there, too bad I could have sent the boys on a mission if I had known. I instead looked at classic VW bugs. I think I am too cheap to get what I want for tooling around town looking cute. Of course if I had a classic bug it would bring our house car rating to two classic cars.

  20. Stacey Says:

Aw, I am not too original – but the windsheild from a car from the 30’s or 40’s…a Bonnie and Clyde type mobile.

The new yarns are gorgeous – yummy bulky – pretty charade too, bummer it is too short:(

  21. trek Says:

I think it looks like the frame of a chaise lounge for your patio or deck.

  22. mfrey Says:

ok, a windshield frame for sure. off a very old camper.
no????? (boy, i hope i win)

  23. Heather Says:

Love the new yarn. And what a fun scavenger hunt you have for us. I would have to guess that it is a vintage windshield for a studebaker, or and old ford or a mercury from the 1950’s. Hope that your dad finds what he is looking for!

  24. Amanda Says:

It looks a bit like a windshield frame from a split window VW bus (1949-1967) but I don’t think that’s right since most of those didn’t have permanently mounted panes of glass, the windows actually swung outward… off to search the internets :)

  25. Amanda Says:

It could be from a 1951 ford woodie wagon…

  26. Nicole Says:

It looks like a windshield to me, too. I don’t know enough about vehicles to be much more specific than that.

  27. Amanda Says:

I immediately thought it was some kind of windshield. Apparently so did everyone else! ha ha…

LOVE the new yarns. Worsted superwash! YUM!

  28. Amanda (CraftyCanadian) Says:

I’m thoroughly obsessed now! One more guess (to go with my VW and Woodie Wagon guesses) and then I’ll leave it alone I swear… I’m leaning heavily toward the windshield from an old Ford pickup. They made split windows from the mid to late 30’s through the late 40’s. Looks like they went to a single pane of glass in 1948…

  29. Nicole Says:

It looks like a front grill on an old car.

  30. michelle Says:

My guess is a windshield for maybe a 40’s era Chevy truck. I tried to get my hubby to help. He said his dad would definitely know, too bad he wasn’t around tonight.

  31. Evelyn Says:

I think its the frame from the split windshield of an old VW vanagon…

  32. Dawne Says:

Maybe I’m out-to-lunch but it just seems too small to be a windshield. What about a window frame … from an old camper trailer?!

Can’t wait to see what it really is :)

  33. Alimysunshine Says:

Yay! More yarn! I can’t wait for the update!

I think it is a windshield from a classic car; from the 1940’s-1950’s to be a bit more specific. There are lots of vintage cars with those divided windshields, like roadsters and touring cars. I can’t wait to find out!

  34. Anna Says:

I have no idea but I love the picture of you and your dad. The yarn as always is absolutely delicious. So is the prize. One whole sock? So somebody only needs to knit one? I should ask Hubby, maybe he will know and I could win him some yarn and a pink sock :-)

  35. krysten Says:

no idea what the metal frame is, but Caroline’s Hat is cute cute! any chance you’ll tempt us further by telling us the yardage of your new skeins???

  36. Anonymous Says:

I think a windshield from a 1939-40 Ford or Chevy.

  37. Gill Says:

What a lovely picture of you and your dad.

I guess the mystery object is a windshield from an old car or truck.

  38. Elise Says:

I thought it may be a frame to a chair.

  39. Mandy Says:

Okay, after looking at a bunch of google images, I have another guess – a 1940’s era Ford pickup truck. It’s been fun reading all of the guesses!

  40. Cutencuddlychildofmfrey Says:

yee haw!!!! I’m goin to the Buckley tractor show to find Elmer T one!

  41. Emily Says:

Well, my first thought was a windshield frame. Of what…I have no idea though.
Those yarns are making me drool!

  42. teresa washington Says:

I think its a fold over windshield frame from an older model convertible car maybe from the 50’s.

  43. teresa washington Says:

one more guess, maybe a truck windshield from the 30’s or 40’s,love your yarn.

  44. Janet Says:

I am also thinking a windshield, or even a back window in an old truck.

Love that Down With Love colorway – love that movie too.

  45. yarnsnob Says:

i guess it the windscreen of a VW camper van….other than that, haven’t the foggiest :)
    Love the colourways

  46. Amy Says:

I thought it was windshield also. Maybe from a small plane?
