Do you want the good news first, or the bad?

By | January 26, 2008

Let’s start with the good, shall we?

It was a great mail day.   A few weeks ago I sent Regina  some tangled up yarn and look what she sent me? A little Barbie sized sweater knit out of Plucky merino fingering weight yarn. It’s so cute I can hardly stand it.

And, I won a contest that Jill of Knitterella fame was having on her site  - if you haven’t seen her adorable tags and knitting/crochet note cards well, you must – you are in for a treat!

Ok. Now for the not so good. The bad. No,  just plain  ugly.

Buttony Sweater.  Love  Emily’s version. And this version. And this.

I swatched. Good. Got gauge. Great. Cast on. Only had to rip and start over twice. Began knitting away…….. went to “try on.”

See that seam? Yep, that one. So, so not suppose to be there.

And it looked like I had made three arm sections. As near as I can tell, I was increasing at a marker that I had no business increasing near. Thus the extra seam or arm looking section. I think….. If anyone has a suggestion or solution… I am all ears.

Now, I am off to lick my wounds. Surely I’ll go back and try again. But, until then…. I’m knitting socks. Maybe I can have a new pair of socks to wear to Madrona.

Beth  - this is for you: Sam, cuddling up in front of the heater, lounging about on the clean laundry.

He’s dying, simply dying, to go outside and play, but it’s way too cold for his little Boston feet.

I am glad the mini sweater arrived.

I am sorry about your real sweater. I don’t even have the courage to try one. Kudos for not giving up, you will get it this time around.

Ellen on January 26, 2008 at 12:31 pm.

Oh no! Okay, start over and just decide it’s your working project at Madrona not for wearing at Madrona. I’d get some more stitch markers (get Amy’s goodtobegirl markers!) and mark specific markers for the sleeve increases. Too much to remember when you just have the green and orange to mark with. We can help you with it when you’re here too!

Don’t be too hard on yourself because I don’t have the ***** to try knitting a sweater. The color you choose is lovely.

Can you ask your blog readers what they think of the name Gracyn (as in Grace-in) for a girl and what middle name do you put with it?

Amanda on January 26, 2008 at 1:04 pm.

Oh my goodness! I think that I would probably ribbit ribbit and start anew.

What a cute mini sweater – and what a nice gesture in Plucky Yarn!

Amy on January 26, 2008 at 1:19 pm.

Sorry about the extra seam in your sweater. It looks like you tried to make the seams even on the front of the sweater when it’s designed to be asymmetrical. I would have done the same thing instinctually. No clue how to fix this one. Good luck! BTW…Sam is so adorable.

bummer about the sweater. i empathize with your “i’ve put all this work in, and it’s just not working out”.

this is why i knit socks.

LOVE the knit tags. must buy.

Wannabe on January 26, 2008 at 2:57 pm.

Maybe as Emily since she knit one? I have no idea since I don’t have the pattern and can’t really look at it. I LOVE the color though and I’m proud of you for knitting one.

I have some of those Knitterella tags..love them. I got mine at…wait…wait for it…Jessica Knits. ;)

I want to kidnap Sam.

Oh, and for Shannon…Gracyn Renee, or Gracyn Marie, Gracyn Rae, something like that.

Emily on January 26, 2008 at 3:51 pm.

Oopsy! yes, I think we’ve all done something like that where you’re knitting along and all of the sudden you’re like…what did I DO!? Don’t give up though! just give it a little break and when you have the heart just rip and give it another go!
that color is going to be so gorgeous on you!

That teeny tiny sweater is so cute! What a bummer about the adult-sized sweater. I hate it when that happens :(

Shawna on January 26, 2008 at 5:14 pm.

ugh! that sucks! stick with it though…that color looks lovely:o)

mai on January 26, 2008 at 8:04 pm.

oh, that photo of sam is too cute! sorry about the mistake in the sweater :( . are we frogging?

yarnsnob on January 27, 2008 at 10:47 am.

I hate to say it but i would rip it back, you’d want it to be pefect. Don’t give up. lovely colour too :)

stacey on January 27, 2008 at 8:14 pm.

Ugh, sorry for your sweater frustrations – I have yet to be brave enough to even try a sweater so I have no good advice, but maybe a drink would help?:) That little sweater is darling! And Knitterella’s stuff is just the cutest! (and your little dog too!)

mfrey on January 27, 2008 at 8:15 pm.

i’d buy a knitted sweater. who
would want such stress??? oh, the frustrations!!! think neck warmers, or socks if you will.
love that sam, he may be cuter than “omg” mr. plucky!!!!

Stacey on January 28, 2008 at 8:23 am.

Persevere my friend! The thing about errors like that… we rarely make them the next time we cast on the damn sweater. I’m well into my first sweater success ever but not until I had ripped it back at least twice. You’ll get in the groove, don’t fret.

Poor sam. looks like he needs the Cat in the Hat to come by.

Naomi on January 28, 2008 at 12:28 pm.

Boy do I know about making mistakes! This Nihon thing is really..frustrating but when I learn something it is so empowering. I know it sounds a bit lame but it really is true. You ARE expanding your knitting skills and part of that is making mistakes that you learn from. Like Ellen said, bring it to Madrona and I can help too!

It will be ok. There are lots of knitters out there willing to help!

I fondled the silk/merino laceweight at Village and…I can tell your yarn at Madrona will be very dangerous for me!

Tracy on January 28, 2008 at 7:23 pm.

Amen, mfrey. The “OMG” is getting outta hand at the plucky home =-)
So sorry to hear about the sweater, I take blame, I am demanding when I want to talk….

also, your neck warmers are amazing, and I do think the only body part of mine that is “ok” is my neck and shoulders…hint, hint…

Gracyn Rae is my tweeners vote.

Amanda on January 30, 2008 at 10:02 am.

Ripping back stinks!! I had to rip back a few times on the sweater I just finished but it was so worth it in the end. Love the color! So pretty.

Knitterella on January 31, 2008 at 7:43 pm.

Sam is so cute!

Glad you got the tags – hope you enjoy them :)

Well, better to find the error out now then later I guess. The sweater looks really cute. It will go better next time.
