A Contest ~
By Sarah | November 20, 2007

Plucky girl doing her very best Vanna White imperssonation.
What familiar objects do these ancient Roman symbols represent? Extra credit if you can tell me where this column is located.
All correct entries will be entered into the random number generator and a winner chosen. What does the winner get? Why a skein of my brand spanking new merino/cashmere fingering weight yarn, of course!
**Edited to add: Contest will be open until midnight EST Wednesday evening, November 21.**
**Edited to add #2: Please feel free to leave your message in the comments – I won’t post the correct answers/comments until the contest is finished.** Thanks!

I know what they are, but do you want the answers here or in an e-mail so we don’t give it away to the others?

I have no idea where the column is, but I do know that the symbols represent the planets in the solar system (this is from someone who’s country used to be under Roman rule!).

Those are the symbols for the planets, and as a wild guess… located somewhere along the Grand Canyon?

Those are the glyphs that astrologers use to represent the planets in charts. From bottom to top they’re in order based on distance from the Sun, the glyph for which, btw, appears to be missing (circle with a dot in the middle). I really wish I knew where this was at – it’s a cool column.

I know, I know… They are the ancient Roman Symbols for the planets and are from top to bottom: Pluto, Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Earth, Venus, & Mercury. Five of them were also used for the Roman days of the week.

When I read your post, I had no idea what those signs could be…until today ! I walk in the “Jardin des Plantes” here in Paris almost every day, but had never paid attention to the symbols written near the plants and the trees. Those are botanical symbols…and thanks to you, I learnt something today. Have a nice Thanksgiving Day !
