Thinking out loud ~

By | March 27, 2010

  • Writer’s Block has me by the throat.
  • A power surge that come this close to burning your house down and fries all your electronics (yes they were all plugged into surge protectors) really bites. The fact that insurance covers it and the fact that we will get new items doesn’t really make it any better. Bit of a pain to put it mildly.
  • Contests. Let’s have one!
  • Spring Fever. We’ve got it bad, how about you?
  • Knitting. I’ve got an extreme case of ‘I want to cast-on for a sweater (see above yarn) but I cannot, for the life of me, decide which one!’
  • Crochet. Yes, let’s. I ask you, how cute is this?
  • How do you make the perfect hard boiled egg? You know, done all the way through and the shell comes off perfectly! It should be the most basic thing ever, but I always have a problem with a sticky shell.
  • So, speaking of contests, I want to know what you’re knitting/crocheting this spring. What are you just dying to cast on/finish? Or, are you searching for ideas as well? Go ahead comment away. I’ve got a pretty snazzy prize for the winner picked out. How does a sweater quantity (maximum of 8 skeins) of worsted weight yarn sound?  I’ll keep comments open until Tuesday, March 30 at 12:00 p.m. Eastern and draw a name.

I am in the midst of knitting my wedding garter, so to keep my sanity in the middle of cobweb weight and size 1 needles, I am working on a Vine Yoke Cardigan. Regarding eggs, I’ve read that if you use non-super fresh eggs the shells won’t stick as much.

I’ve just started a Brandywine Shawl for my mom in the latest Plucky Classics. I’ve been really stalled out these past few months, so getting this started this weekend was fantastic. I’m now thinking about making a Manu cardigan. I definitely need more cardigans!!

It’s funny, I totally had plans to knit a sweater but then was overcome with the urge to knit hats. So I’ve cast on for the Ribby Toque from Knitscene, and have plans for a Koolhaas and Windschief. And that might just be a start.

I want to make another Citron in Plucky lace – a really, really big one to wrap around myself on chilly spring/early summer evenings while sitting at outdoor cafes.

And the eggs – here’s how I do mine: Cover eggs with cold water in appropriately-sized saucepan and turn on med-high for 20 minutes. After the timer goes off, immediately drain water; run cold water over for a minute or two; and then fill the pan with cold water from the fridge to cover the eggs. I let them sit for about five minutes, tap them around the pan while in the water to break the shell all over, and then peel under lukewarm running water. Hope it works for you too. :) :)

Que Sera is definitely in my queue and would look especially nice in that blue!

Oh. And those hot damn red shoes you put into my head would look perfect with it…

I have a few WIPs to finish up and then I’m looking to start a sweater or two – maybe it’s time to finally use up some stash yarn and brave a fingering weight sweater?

I’m dying to cast on for the geodesic cardigan from knitscene. Any swingy spring cardigan will do though.

Despite having a bunch of WIP’s I am itching to start on new projects. Right now I am working on a Girasole as a baby blanket for a friend in pastel merino handspun. I recently purchased some lace books (A Gathering of Lace, Lace Knitting of Estonia) and I see a mega-uber-lace shawl going on the needles soon.

As for crochet-I am still wanting to give this pullover http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/icicles-pullover a go. I am also enamored of a granny square coverlet in handspun scraps. :-)

I am currently working on crochet sun hats made with plant yarns such as linen and cotton. Also, a lacy, light triangular shawl.

I just finished up a few knitted things, and my 6-year old daughter and I just chose pretty printed fabric for summer skirts …. so I’m itching to cast on for some matching cardigans.

Trying to finish my OWLS sweater! Now that the sunny weather is sneaking in, my motivation has died…

A year or so ago, with help from 3 lovely Ravelers in the Plucky Classics Club, I managed to amass enough “Madeleine Elster” to make a Featherweight Cardigan for my now (almost) 21 year-old daughter, my knitting muse. Having just spent a blissful week with her and her father in Arizona during her spring break from college, and watching her slip in and out of a stream of pretty, summery cardigans, none knit by me, I realize it is time to celebrate spring and having my wonderful daughter in my life by casting on now with that soft, silvery grey merino. She has a summer internship at a hospital in Boston coming up, so I will continue only to see her in increments of 5-7 days at a time, but if I can finish her Featherweight soon, I know she’ll be comfortable as well as fashionable, surrounded by all that good Plucky (and Mother’s) Love, all summer long.

I’m knitting socks, socks, socks this spring! Also a cabled vest from a Japanese pattern book I picked up over the weekend. It’ll probably be too warm to wear it by the time it’s done, but I don’t care because it’s so cute! I’ll save it for fall.

The sweater I’m absolutely dying to start is Twist’s Mary Jane, using Sundara sock yarn in a teal/charcoal-y colour. I’ll be following some other knitters’ modifications by making longer and less poufy sleeves and will probably add some waist shaping as well.

I’m also knitting a shawl, Miralda triangular shawl, from the Knitted Lace in Estonia book in DiC Smooshy in the “Deep Seaflower” colourway. This one is meant for my grandma, who will have her birthday on April 20th.
