Francis Revisited. Literally.

By | August 23, 2009

Two weeks since my last post?!?  Well that’s no good. No good at all. But, I have some knitting to show…..

Out of hibernation (started way back in February and stopped mid-torso) is another Francis Revisited. This is such a great little sweater pattern (I can’t say enough good things about it. As I said, it’s simple, but the results are so very wearable and you can customize to your exact specifications). Grabbed it out of hibernation about a week ago and finished the torso and cowl in one day and then the two sleeves the next. Done. All in all, the sweater took roughly a week to knit (FANTASTIC t.v. knitting).

Raveled.

This means I need another sweater to knit! Are you a sweater knitter? Do you have grand plans to knit one (or more!) this Fall? Tell me about them, I’d love to hear. You know, I think I just made up a contest! Tell me what your Fall knitting plans are and they surely don’t have to be sweaters, nope, not at all, sky is the limit!

So, comment away and I’ll draw names for, what else, yarn of course! I’ll keep comments open until Thursday, August 27th at Midnight Eastern. Can’t wait to here what you all have planned – you are a crazy talented bunch!

I love your sweater. I’m really a sucker for that deep chocolate brown color…
I’m going to try to get up the gumption to knit a Featherweight cardi in laceweight – YIKES! At least the pattern is simple!
And of course an Ishbel and Damson in Plucky for sure!

Jen on August 24, 2009 at 5:32 am.

This was going to be the year of the cardigan (diminishing ribs, garter yoke, featherweight) but your beautiful sweater may just have kicked this pattern to the top of the queue.

Phoe on August 24, 2009 at 5:55 am.

Great sweater! I’ve got a Francis Revisited in my queue but at the moment I’m knitting the Treeline Striped Cardigan. I love it so much I’m even enjoying the sleeves!

Emily on August 24, 2009 at 7:02 am.

mmm …. fall knitting. I love your Francis Revisited! And especially over the plaid shirt.

I have lots of plans for fall knitting, but two highlights:
1) An OWLS sweater for me.
2) A selbu modern for my mom out of Nicholas and Alexandra AND Jezebel. I’m quite excited about this one. :)

Mandy on August 24, 2009 at 7:13 am.

Well, my grand plan is to assess all of my WIP’s and then finish those that are deemed keepers. That means that I will likely be knitting a few baby sweaters, an afghan, some lace, and a few lingering pairs of socks. Whew, I better get knitting!

Rachel on August 24, 2009 at 9:18 am.

I am thinking of starting a pair of Grown Up Bootied by Ysolda. That could just be because my toes are really cold this morning. I bought a skein of handpainted bulky for a shoulder hug I am designing. Also in progress for a danish wrap shawl that I think is going to mimic Joseph’s coat. I have several skeins I hope to knit in a vanilla sock pattern and several skeins for Cookie A and Cat Bordhi patterns. Oh and the mohair over cardigan from the last Mason-Dixon book. That is going to be my first adult sweater, if I can get the courage to start.

Lauren on August 24, 2009 at 9:20 am.

Great sweater! You always look great in that style.

As for fall plans, I’m thinking I might knit my first sweater – for a friend who is having a baby. This way I get to practice some techniques on a smaller scale first. Then, on to some traditional fall projects. Several hats and scarves lined up, a shawl for a Christmas present, and then some lace for me. Maybe even and MCW shawl or cashmere lace – yay!

Abby on August 24, 2009 at 9:51 am.

Francis is such a great pattern. I made one in Silk Road Tweed and will probably make another.

Fall knitting plans – finish my version of Wisteria that spent the summer hibernating. Also, design and knit a female saddle-shoulder cardigan based on Durrow. I’ve started swatching for this in Queensland Rustic Tweed.

Oh, also, Demi needs to be ripped back to the ribbing – I screwed up somewhere. I’d like to wear this sweater by the dead of winter in January or February. In a lovely chestnut shade of Skye Tweed.

Hmm…looking over this list – I’m a certifiable TweedHead.

Emily on August 24, 2009 at 10:09 am.

Dang girl! you’re GOOD! that sweater is fantastic on you!
I reeeeealy need to bring some of my half finished sweaters out of hibernation. I started Wisp yesterday in fingerling weight and it is flying off the needles.

Barb Collins on August 24, 2009 at 10:12 am.

Now I think Francis is going to be a fall project – it’s great. I’m starting a cardigan for my daughter, and I have plans for a coat-type cardigan that my sister in law specifically asked me about. I’ve been really into shawls this summer and am loving them, so I want to do a few more for holiday gifts. Can I really get all this done?

Debra aka 'kitfox" on August 24, 2009 at 10:40 am.

Love the way that your Frances Revisited looks over the plaid shirt!

I’m knitting an Ishbel shawl now (finally) but as far as sweaters go, I’m thinking about Ingenue from *Custom Knits* by Wendy Bernhard.

Kitten With A Whiplash on August 24, 2009 at 11:02 am.

I think I missed the fall, it’s been winter in SF for the past week. I’m slumping on the knitting side lately. I need to put sleeves on one sweater, and kinda sorta wanna start another. Also need to do some home-dec items for Christmas presents. Fortunately I have some spinning to occupy me while my knitting passion rekindles.

Kate on August 24, 2009 at 11:15 am.

I’m hoping to become a sweater-knitter this fall! I have yarn for two sweaters–one for me and one for my mom–that I’ve had since LAST fall. :) I thought I had already decided on patterns, but I just may have to make a Francis–yours is beautiful!

Lara on August 24, 2009 at 12:18 pm.

Love your sweater! I need to finish mine this fall. I am also knitting the Firesides Sweater which I bought yarn for last winter. I am so glad that I am finally knitting it!

Thuy on August 24, 2009 at 1:09 pm.

Hooray for fall! It’s my favorite time of year. I’ve got a long list of sweaters to knit, but I think these are what I can realistically do by the end of 2009:

1 – Georgie by Kim Hargreeves
2 – Emily by Jenny Watson
3 – Zip up Cardigan by Hannah Fettig (for the hubby)

Erin on August 24, 2009 at 1:20 pm.

I’ve haven’t got many plans for my fall knitting yet. I’m going to try to put together a pattern based on an idea I have for your lovely Cashmerino Silk Fingering, but we’ll see how it goes, it’s nothing super special, just basic, but it’s my first time creating my own real pattern completely on my own. I’d also really like to finish a Melody Shawl before it gets cool so that I can be ready for the fall season.

Diana on August 24, 2009 at 2:38 pm.

That is just an awesome sweater…definitely adding it to my ravelry queue.

I have a sweater, wicked, on hold but I’m 3 months pregnant! I realized I won’t be fitting in it this winter, so onto other projects! I have a couple projects (springtime bandit & hearts/flower socks)I need to finish up then onto BABY knitting. I plan on making the baby surprise jacket.

Marla on August 24, 2009 at 2:56 pm.

I have the Deep Breath Sweater by Kirsten Hipsky in my queue. I like the relative ease of the knit and the fact that you can use any weight yarn. You can also add to the length or shorten the sleeves. I am an imperfect knitter so any mods that I make would look intentional.

Anonymous on August 24, 2009 at 3:40 pm.

I’m working on Christmas gifts — Cobblestone, Ysolda, and several pairs of socks from Knitting with Handpainted Yarn — as well as two baby gifts. Maybe I should quit my day job….

Annette on August 24, 2009 at 4:32 pm.

I just added this to my queue. So cute!

I’m planning to make the Climbing Vines pullover from Interweave Knits Fall 2008.

Gayle on August 24, 2009 at 4:37 pm.

Finishing my Girasole shawl, Damson shawl, and knitting for new granddaughter, who is due in October.

Julie on August 24, 2009 at 6:15 pm.

My Fall knitting plans include finishing my first Plucky cashmere scarf, then rolling around nekked in it and my other, as-yet-unknitted skeins of cashmere. I will also finish a lovely Jade Cashmere sweater I started last winter, which is a top-down sweater I re-styled from a bottom up, piece by piece pattern. I have learned that top down is the way to go for me and the girls, so that things fit. That way I can try as I go and make things that actually fit me!

skeller11 on August 24, 2009 at 6:42 pm.

Hmmm . . . I’ve got a couple of sweaters that I need to move to: a Feb Lady for myself, another from the Kimono book, and the Scholar’s Jacket from Cheryl Oberle’s book. HOWEVER. First I am dying to put in the substantial work on several lace projects, some in Plucky and some in Sundara, so that is where my focus will remain for most of the fall, interspersed with the odd pair of socks here and there :) I am so enjoying learning so many new and different techniques and materials to work with, but at some point I will also want to focus on fit. I think ability to fit is definitely one of the major marks of a good knitter, and I am far far far from that at this point :)

Anne on August 24, 2009 at 8:12 pm.

Yep, I’ve got several sweaters on the list as well as a few more lace scarves using the Plucky laceweights I’ve been hoarding; got to get some more socks off the needles though!

amy lounsberry on August 24, 2009 at 8:15 pm.

fall knitting = fiddlehead mittens, a baby sweater, hats and the February Lady Sweater, and felted Christmas stockings x3! Wow, I’d better get to work.

heather on August 24, 2009 at 11:16 pm.

Finally getting around to the Tilted Duster and Vivian this fall! I can’t wait for the cool weather…

Wendy on August 25, 2009 at 6:42 am.

Thanks for the contest!

My fall knitting includes The Concetta Cardigan by elizabeth smith, a Kiri shawl, socks, mittens, baby legwarmies and baby hats.

Shauna on August 25, 2009 at 8:47 am.

Gorgeous sweater!! My fall plans are to finish my Christmas gift knitting(the many Melody Shawls) and to also start a February Lady Sweater and Featherweight for myself :)

Becky on August 25, 2009 at 8:53 am.

LOVE your Francis! She’s on my list for fall, too. :)

I’m also knitting a Treeline Cardigan, and of course I’ve got some projects in mind for the Plucky Sundries KAL — a Baktus, for sure, and hopefully some others, too.

Jeanne on August 25, 2009 at 10:51 am.

Socks. I like making socks – the Cotty pattern in two different yarns, a simple ribbed sock for another, the artichoke socks in charcoal grey for my sister. And Ishbel for myself. Tho I am tempted by the Bramblewood Vest and there’s a cardigan on the Berroco website that’s intriguing. Maybe after the holiday knitting is done!

Jennifer on August 25, 2009 at 11:09 am.

My fall/winter knitting plans include finishing a baby blanket and hats/socks for my second little one who is on the way. Maybe this one will get her blanket before her first birthday. :)

Amber on August 25, 2009 at 11:58 am.

I’ve been a knitting fiend lately, and have *loads* of plans for the fall.

First and foremost, my son’s Scrappy Sock Yarn Blanket, using the gorgeous woven stitch from Zona Sherman’s Scrappy Lengthwise Scarf. I swear, it’s the perfect blanket stitch.

That means I have to do a lot of sock knitting or a lot of knitting other things with sock yarns, so I’ve planned:

1) Hurricane Hat by Andrea Goutier
2) Gathered Scarf by Marise Roudier
3) Stripey knee socks of my own design
4) Maude by Diane Mulholland
5) Global Warming by Suvi Simola
6) maybe some Women’s Stockings (Design #33) by Rauma Designs, if I can get over my fear of colorwork. They’re amazing!

For non-sock yarn knitting, I’ll be doing Coraline by Ysolda Teague; Raspy (from Rowan Denim); maybe a modified Sylvi by Mari Muinonen (or some other jacket in bulky weight); and some sort of hoodie – I’m thinking Central Park.

Liz on August 25, 2009 at 12:12 pm.

Francis has been in my queue for AGES. I keep wanting to knit it, but I never seem to find the right yarn. Oh, woe is me.

I have Coraline by Ysolda on the needles, and it’s about 40 rows away from being finished. But those 40 rows, oh man, they’ve got almost 300 stitches each in DK weight in a crazy smocking pattern. Hence my dread. Once the weather cools down I’ll probably feel more motivated to finish it.

But the big thing on my list of stuff to knit is the Hermione sweater from the Half-Blood Prince movie. I’ve been tinkering around with design ideas for awhile, and searching for a good yarn. Should I do ribbing on the yoke, or garter stitch? If I do ribbing, should it be 1×1, 1×1 twisted, 2×2, or something else more decorative like 1×3?

I guess I don’t have to worry about it much until I get the yarn and start swatching!

I’m also working on a few shawl designs in a slightly heavier weight yarn that will be more useful for the fall than all of the laceweight ones I’ve accumulated!

Jacqueline on August 25, 2009 at 1:42 pm.

I have to finish, finish, finish, all that is currently on the needles! Then…

A February Lady in Plucky
Ingenue in plucky
and apparently a whole lotta shawls in some of that lovely Plucky SMF which keeps jumping in my basket every time there is a Plucky update and now falls off the storage shelving!

catsnrabbits on August 25, 2009 at 1:57 pm.

I am just hoping to get some christmas knitting done this fall and work on knitting down my stash a bit. I’d like to try some fibers I haven’t knit with yet too. Silk/merino for one.

Melissa on August 25, 2009 at 6:09 pm.

Great sweater! I am hoping to finish my February Lady Sweater soon, and then it will be on to either Coraline or Tangled Yoke Cardigan. Other than that, I’ll probably be knitting socks since they’re so easy to take along to work!

Marilyn on August 25, 2009 at 9:32 pm.

So many patterns…so little time. I have just completed the Market Vest, started a wrap with three buttons, and want to make the Empire Waist Cardigan…and always socks.

Sandra on August 26, 2009 at 6:36 am.

I definitely have a sweater on the docket but haven’t decided on a pattern yet. I’m also going to be casting on shortly for a Lace Ribbon scarf, another pair of socks, and I’m going to try knitting my first mittens.

Kara on August 26, 2009 at 10:42 am.

I have been itching to cast on for a sweater, but can’t really do it at the moment due to my ever shrinking body. :) I did, however, just score some yarn to make a Featherweight Cardigan, which shouldn’t suffer too much as I shrink & will be a nice addition to my fall wardrobe. :)

Other than that, I’m working on baby things for friends that are having children & I’m trying to finish up things that have been lingering on the needles too long (this week I finished a pair of socks that had been hanging around for over a year!).

I do love fall knitting. I just hope the semester of classes doesn’t steal TOO much of my knitting time.

Carla on August 26, 2009 at 12:12 pm.

Great sweater! And it fits so nicely! cj

Jane on August 26, 2009 at 1:56 pm.

I’m working on number 14 for NaKniSweMoDo and am trying to get a few more sweaters in before the end of the year. I have a fingering and a sock weight sweaters on the needles now, but will probably do one or two in heavier weights once it gets cooler. I’ve really been craving texture and color, so maybe an Elizabeth Zimmerman cabled sweater or an EZ yoke sweater with sock yarn scraps for the contrasting colors.

Corrie on August 26, 2009 at 2:08 pm.

That sweater is gorgeous! My fall plans include that same sweater (will never happen, but fun to dream), holiday gifts (scarves + mittens), and mittens for my own children. Also thinking of knitting the Sundog sweater (from Twist Collective) for my daughter.

Susan V. on August 26, 2009 at 3:44 pm.

Just this morning, 2 of my 3 boys requested Harry Potter scarves, so they’ll have to come first, but I love the tunic in the new Interweave Knits, and also the button-up shawl/vest. Your sweater is beautiful–I’m off to look it up on Ravelry!

Rachel on August 26, 2009 at 5:03 pm.

I am loving this sweater…the color you chose, the fit…while I had my fall knitting plans all figured out, this post may change my mind!

My (original) biggest goal for this fall is to knit Sylvi (from the first Twist Collective).

ikkinlala on August 26, 2009 at 7:11 pm.

I’m not a sweater knitter (yet). My plans for the fall are to continue with socks and mittens, and to find a glove pattern my sister in law likes.

Cynthia on August 27, 2009 at 10:07 am.

I’m not really a sweater knitter, although I have knitted almost three. I plan to knit an Ingenue or Tang plus an Elsewhere. The Whisper cardigan is also on my list…if I can stop knitting socks.!

Megan C. on August 27, 2009 at 3:59 pm.

I’ve suddenly gotten on a big lace kick (like many other people I know), so it mostly likely will involve lace. I am getting married next fall and intend on knitting my veil, so perhaps that will be my project for this fall? I would also like to knit myself a cardigan, as my desk at work is drafty. I’ve had one in the works for a while, but keep having to tear it out!

kathleen on August 28, 2009 at 2:37 pm.

grand plans are to finally finish st. brigid. I am at 5 years in progress. i have no business starting another sweater till it is finished!
