What are you reading?~

Summer time is not only for knitting but hanging out with family and good friends, cooking and, of course, reading too! With that in mind I found myself drawn to A Homemade Life by Molly Wizenberg, author of the mouth watering blog, Orangette. It’s a darling book of essays and recipes that I found to be a quick (and very heartwarming) read and chock full of some fabulous recipes. The first ones I’m going to try are the macaroons and her roasted tomatoes.
I’ve never made homemade bread and do not own a bread machine so when I saw this title making its rounds through my contacts on Flickr – I thought that ‘there’s the bread book for me’ and have grand plans to give it a twirl this week. Can you tell where this is going? I feel a contest coming on~
So…. tell me. What are you reading this summer? What are you cooking? Drinking? Inquiring minds want to know! Please leave me a comment – I’ll be taking entries all through this week and drawing two winners from the entries on Sunday, June 28th. The winners will receive a skein of yarn or a copy of the book, A Homemade Life, the choice is yours.

Oh, and August 11th South of Broad byPat Conroy (who happens to be one of my favorite authors and the story is set in one of my favorite spots in the whole world) is released. You know what I’ll be doing that weekend. I can’t wait! It’s been ages since he’s released a new novel and, I’m embarrassed to say, almost as long since I’ve sat down and read a novel (do unabridged audio books count?).
Anyway, I’m rambling….. so, go ahead let me know what you are reading/cooking/drinking/eating and loving this summer. Can’t wait to hear from you!

Hi Sarah,
I am re-reading Jen Lancaster’s trio of funny memoir’s and going to read her newest one “Pretty in Plaid”. I always laugh out loud when I read her books.
I’m drinking:lots of water! Back at weight watchers determined to finish losing the weight this time!
Cooking? Lots of stuff on the grill. Trying to get back to my veggie roots and also daring to try some seafood out on the grill. MMM…summer grilling is the best!
June 22nd, 2009 at 1:39 pm
What a great contest! I am cooking lots of pasta and bread, eating salad dishes, (my favorite salad is tomato/cucumber/dill), drinking Manhattans, and I intend to read more Taylor Caldwell.

Since knitting has basically taken over my “me” time after the kidlets go to bed, I haven’t figured out a way to incorporate much reading. Recently, though, I joined audible.com and am listening to my first audiobook, The Friday Night Knitting Club, by Kate Jacobs. The next actual book I want to read is nothing fancy. Dare I admit it’s Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince? I have to read it before the movie is released! But it looks like I’ll have to add South of Broad to my summer reading list (LOVE Pat Conroy AND Charleston!). As far as summer eats go, my favorite summer-time foods include watermelon, Japanese curry, and so-men (cold Japanese noodles, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somen for more info!). YUM! Thanks for the fun contest, Sarah

I just finished reading 9 or re- reading I should say) The Shipping News by Annie Proulx. I watched the movie as soon as I finished…it made me feel cooler in the already hot Texas summer. I have now cracked open Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell. Snarky & educational.
June 22nd, 2009 at 2:00 pm
I have an eclectic palate when it comes to books, though I usually stick with Sci-Fi Fantasy. I just finished reading: “You Suck!” By Christopher Moore, “The Eyre Affair” & “The Big Over Easy” by Jasper Fforde (hilarious for those who love grammar and word jokes).
Yesterday I made a Rhubarb Custard pie with Cream Cheese crust (recipe from “The Pie and Pastry Bible) and tonight I’m going to try and make bread from my copy of “Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day”! I’m so excited!
June 22nd, 2009 at 2:03 pm
I’m doing my normal summer thing of rereading the Little House series. I always say that nothing beats summer heat like reading The Long Winter.
June 22nd, 2009 at 2:07 pm
I LOVE Pat Conroy! Lords of Discipline, particularly, is one of my favorites ever, but I’ve read everything he’s put out.
This summer I’m starting reading for my comprehensive exams, so I’ve got lots of American Modernism, Queer Theory, and Contemporary on the horizon!
June 22nd, 2009 at 2:08 pm
I had the extreme pleasure of visiting Charleston in 1998, and am going to convince my husband that it is worth the trip so that he will come with me and see for himself.
As for summer reading – my list is endless. At the moment I’m reading Divas Don’t Knit (Gil McNeil) and The Tenth Gift (Jane Johnson). I just finished re-reading the 4th book in the Twilight series (yes, I am hooked along with my daughter). Next up I am re-reading Resistance (Anita Shreve). There are books all over our house.
Cooking – anything that can go on the grill (especially wild salmon), and a LOT of salads.
Drinking – white wine & soda, sangria or my favourite slushy frozen things like margaritas.
Loving – my life at the moment. It is almost too perfect.
Love your contest idea and if I was lucky enough to win, I know I’ll go for the yarn. You have an amazing eye for colour combinations.
June 22nd, 2009 at 2:17 pm
I am reading Carlos Ruiz Zafon’s new book, The Angel’s Game. It is a prequel to The Shadow of the Wind, one of my favorites. Since it is based in Spain I have been cooking lots of small dishes, grilled veggies, olives. My local Williams Sonoma has the contestants from The Next Food Network Star cooking in the store. My husband and I came home Saturday and cooked the chicken and Sunday the bacon, from the demo.
I am also looking forward to the Pat Conroy book. Also, the next book from Steig Larsson. His first book, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was a great read.
Thanks for the contest.
June 22nd, 2009 at 2:25 pm
Reading: I got some Tracy Chevalier, any book by her is fantastic, Fallen angels is great or some “light” reading by Freya North or Jane Green
Cooking/eating: anything easy like greek salad, some BBQ, pasta
Drinking: mochito, red wine, water
Loving: icecream from McDonald with strawberry topping
June 22nd, 2009 at 2:29 pm
We gave the Lords of Ireland series (by Rutherfurd) to my mother-in-law for her birthday, and she just lent me volume 1 last weekend. That’ll be my reading for the next couple of weeks, and then onto volume 2. I’m just scared because their just-one-more-page/chapter quality is horrible, and I usually stay up til 4 am reading them!
June 22nd, 2009 at 2:30 pm
What am I reading? – I have a whole list of things to be read this summer. I’m currently reading Shutter Island. The next book in line is Colleen Dewhurst’s autobiography.
Cooking? – I’ve been experimenting a lot this summer with pasta salads. I love pasta in any form, but a cool refreching pasta salad is so yummy in the summer.
Drinking? – I love anything lime in the summer, so I’m been drinking a lot of limeade and Lime Fizzes. I adore Leinie’s Summer Shady, and anything from Wollerscheim Winery here in WI is a favorite.
Loving? – My husband. Our one year anniversary is July 5th. The first year has gone so quickly and has been so much fun. Also, (no brown-nosing intended) I am in love with Plucky yarn. I discovered your yarns at the Madison Knit In in March, and I have been in love with knitting them, and with the amazing results I get. My Raspberry Bubble Ishbel is a prized possession. (I have met both you, the dyer of the yarn and Ysolda, the designer of the pattern, which makes the project even that much more special to me.)
June 22nd, 2009 at 2:45 pm
At the moment, I’m reading Legal Research & Writing for a summer course. No fun!
But I am listening to an audiobook in the car – Rebel Angels by Libba Bray. It’s part of the Gemma Doyle series(I think young adult books are so fun), set the late 1880s England.
My newest wine love is Bota Box’s Old Vine Zinfandel but I’m actually bored with everything I know how to cook & really want to try some new recipes.
June 22nd, 2009 at 2:46 pm
I’m audiobooking the Diana Gabaldon “Outlander” series this summer – currently about 1/3 of the way through the 2nd book right now, and loving it.
Cooking: lots of veggies, thanks to our CSA
Loving: The weather!!
June 22nd, 2009 at 2:49 pm
Reading – Breaking Dawn, the 4th book of the Twilight saga. I never dreamed I would get into this series the way I have.
Cooking – Breakfast for dinner. My husband is a true southerner and loves a biscuit. So Sunday evening we had family & friends over for breakfast. We had eggs, bacon, sausage, gravy & scratch BISCUITS. It was great!
Always Loving: some ice cream on a very hot day.
June 22nd, 2009 at 3:02 pm
I can sympathize with Liz in the comment above. Right now I’m reading almost nothing but bar exam prep books and they are definitely not fun. But, just yesterday I bought a book that I can’t wait to start reading when I get the chance. It’s The Angel’s Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. I LOVED his first book, The Shadow of the Wind, and I can’t wait to try this one.
As for cooking, I’ve let my husband take over the kitchen while I’m studying for the bar. His new thing is homemade ravioli. Yummm…
June 22nd, 2009 at 3:11 pm
Currently reading “Truck” by Michael Perry to be followed by “Coop,” his newest. They’re both nonfiction about living and growing food in small town, USA. Very good so far!
June 22nd, 2009 at 3:20 pm
I found this cheesecake receipe and as cool as it looks (and I will have to make it as shown in the future), I’m going to make a red, white and blue version for the 4th of July!
June 22nd, 2009 at 3:26 pm
Thank you for sharing the news that Pat Conroy is releasing a new novel. He is my favorite as well and wish he would publish more but then maybe having to wait so long between releases is one of the things that contributes to his writing brilliance. My book club is reading Friday Night Knit Club and I am the only knitter in the group. I feel like I will be the guest speaker when we meet this Thursday evening.
I am in the Plucky Knitter Classic yarn group and wait every month for my yarn to come. One of these days I will be on top of things and order from one of the shop updates.
I am cooking all the time these days as I have three kids home from college this summer and a friend of one of my childrens living with us for the summer. Any quick dinner ideas will be much appreciated.
Thank you for your blog I truly enjoy reading it.
June 22nd, 2009 at 3:34 pm
Yay for contests! I just finished reading/listening to Dickens’s Bleak House, and while it was worthwhile by the end, I won’t deny that it was a long haul. In the summer I love to drink wheat/white beers, like Rickard’s White and Hoegaarden, and have been eating, lately, summer fruits, mexican food, and salt and vinegar chips. mmm…chips…
June 22nd, 2009 at 3:41 pm
Funny you should ask. Just this second I am furiously trying to finish The Elegance of the Hedgehog in time for tomorrow night’s book club meeting! Also, I just picked up Reif Larsen’s The Selected Works of TS Spivet. Haven’t started it yet, but I gather it is about the cross-country journey of a 12 year old genius. It’s hardcover only, but flipping through the pages was a treat in itself! There are little sketches throughout the pages filled with the boy’s discoveries as he travels.
June 22nd, 2009 at 3:42 pm
I’m on a huge Jane Smiley kick. “10 Days in the Hills” (which reads like a beach book, but is top-notch writing); her novella “Ordinary Love”; her short story collection “The Age of Grief” — they’re all so good.
June 22nd, 2009 at 3:46 pm
Hi Sarah,
I am currently ready “Shutter Island” by Dennis Lehane. It’s a page turner, mystery, thriller. I am about half way through and highly recomend it. As far as cooking goes– I’m not. We spend most nights at the softball diamond watching my daughter catch for her high school. This means that, unfortunately, we have been eating alot of concession stand food– ugh! As far as what I’m drinking this summer– blackberry iced tea, almost every day– yum!!
June 22nd, 2009 at 4:00 pm
How funny! I just put A Homemade Life on hold at the library the other day after feeling compelled to read it when it was mentioned on a favorite blog: http://www.superherodesigns.com/journal/
I’ve needed a good laugh or five lately, so I’m re-reading “Good Omens” by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett for the umpteenth time. It’s still laugh out loud funny, even though I know what’s coming.
I’m also reading about homeschooling – Guerilla Learning, The Unschooling Handbook, etc.
And the kiddo and I are reading Harry Potter together.
Cooking: This is a tough one. We’re getting back to basics – no more eating out for a while. It’s a little scary.
Drinking: Herbal iced tea, water, and coffee. Licorice mint tea mixed with black tea is bliss on a hot summer day.
June 22nd, 2009 at 4:15 pm
Hey, looks like we have similar bookshelves! I love A Homemade Life, and the Artisan Bread book is terrific.
I just made the chickpea salad with red wine vinegar from Orangette, and it was delicious. As was the French Yogurt Cake.
I’m reading Out Stealing Horses right now, and I just finished Steve Martin’s memoirs (Born Standing Up) — fascinating! Also Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell.
June 22nd, 2009 at 4:16 pm
I’m currently reading trash. Complete TRASH I tell you. Right now on the nightstand is Literacy and Longing in LA by Jennifer Kaufman and then I’m also reading the 5th Sookie Stackhouse book…
I’m drinking lots of beer. I’m cooking pretty much nothing because it’s hot as Hades and this mama doesn’t cook in the summer. This week I’m trying a new recipe from Vegetarian Times that’s a Tofu rice veggie cold salad…mmmm….and then I’m doing a black bean and veg pasta salad one night….see the pattern. Cold food.
I’m loving spinning this summer so much that I’m going to have gigantic calves by winter just in time to hide them with jeans. Hermmmm.
June 22nd, 2009 at 4:23 pm
Wouldn’t you know it, reading A Handmade Life is at the top of my list of things to do when I get home in a month. At the moment I’m slowly making my way through Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azcaban in Spanish. I feel I should emphasis the slow part of that sentence. I just cooked up some black bean and red pepper topped burgers! I’m teaching myself to cook this year, while I’m abroad I’m working on ways to sneak healthy things into meat dishes so I can “poison” my meat and potato loving boyfriend with veggies!
June 22nd, 2009 at 4:36 pm
Great questions! I put aside my regular iced tea this summer for some green tea iced tea.
As for cooking, I have been super lazy about this lately. I do love a pork soulvaki recipe I found from allrecipes.com – so simple and the pork is delish. Also, I have been eating sushi at least once a week.
As for reading, I have checked a bunch of sock knitting books out of the library since I seem to be obsessed with socks these days. I also am reading a lot of Dr. Seuss books these days to the kids. However, I am trying to encourage my 6 year old to read to my 4 year old
June 22nd, 2009 at 4:45 pm
I have a stack of novels and memoirs by my bedside, but at the moment I’m quite consumed with books about food. I’m reading “Well Preserved” by Eugenia Bone, which teaches you how to preserve a number of different things and then offers a few recipes for each. I also picked up a lovely little book by Deborah Madison called “What We Eat When We Eat Alone,” a wonderful new baking book called “Rustic Fruit Desserts” and Marc Bittman’s “Food Matters,” which is about responsible eating. Lest you think I have a totally one-track mind, I recently picked up the new (and posthumously published) short story collection by John Updike and “The Selected Works of TS Spivet” by Reif Larsen. I recently finished “Columbine,” which was absolutely harrowing, but incredibly well-written and reported.
June 22nd, 2009 at 5:07 pm
I’m reading Prep right now, meh so far, but I have a huge stack that I’m hoping to work through next week on vacation. I’m in a CSA this year so I’ll probaby be cooking lots of veggies, and becuase it’s Plucky Lace KAL I’m knitting lots of lacE
June 22nd, 2009 at 5:47 pm
Reading: Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice”–totally cracks me up and sends me into another universe. Cooking: Very little, impatiently waiting for my little lettuces and tomatoes to get big enough to make salads, salads, salads. Drinking: Dr. Pepper anyone? Bad habit, I know.
Thanks for the giveaway, love your yarn.
June 22nd, 2009 at 5:50 pm
Another odd summer for us… my husband is traveling back and forth to London on business, we will be joining him a couple times as well. I’m spending this week with the other man in my life, our 14 year old son, who loves to cook. Lot’s of fresh fish and veggies. Last night it was seared tuna over fresh spinach with a lemon vinaigrette and a glass of wine for me, yum!
On the bedside table it’s T.C. Boyle’s The Women, with Carlos Ruez Zafon’s The Angels Game next. I too am anxiously awaiting the new Conroy book and look forward to hunkering down with it late summer! A reading, knitting and traveling summer!
June 22nd, 2009 at 5:52 pm
I *just* finished reading A Homemade Life (sigh…WONderful!) and now I’m working on Frank McCourt’s Teacher Man in French , and when that seems like too much work, I open up Newspaper, Cardboard, Pennies and Eggs for a Better Garden, a book of tips for organic gardening. I do love non-fiction
June 22nd, 2009 at 6:07 pm
drinking— cava and water
reading— Animals Make Us Human by Temple Grandin and many magazines.
cooking—not much; eat lots of salads and make pizzas. go to the farmers’ market every week.
June 22nd, 2009 at 6:22 pm
Believe it or not, my dad wrote a sci-fi genre novel called D.S.E.V. That’s what I’m reading! Next after that is Walter Moseley’s newest, The Long Fall.
June 22nd, 2009 at 6:52 pm
Ooh — I’ve been perusing Artisan Bread too! I just finished reading The Chosen One, a teen novel about a 13-year old in a polygamous family who has been “chosen” to be 7th wife to her uncle. Way good read! Currently reading Between the Bridge and the River by Craig Ferguson. DH and I just finished listening to Pride and Predudice and Zombies — very enjoyable! And I’ll make a tasty Pig Lickin’ cake later this week for a work potluck; I’m hoping it cools off just a bit before I bake it.
June 22nd, 2009 at 7:44 pm
Oh, I’ve been drinking *way* too much IBC Root Beer. They put something addictive into it. I swear.
And I’ve also given in to temptation and ordered Charlaine Harris’s set of Sookie Stackhouse novels.
June 22nd, 2009 at 8:01 pm
I’ve been eying up that Artisan Bread book for some time now. I might have to make a special trip up to Barnes and Noble this weekend to pick a copy up for myself.
I love the summer for one reason and one reason only. Fresh veggies from the Joe’s family’s farm. I’ll be making plenty of Panzanella salad, summer squash over pasta and peppers stuffed with prosciutto and cheese. I’ll also be baking yummy blueberry muffins and cooking up jams of all different flavors along with zucchini relish, cucumber mint relish and plenty of bread and butter pickles!
I’m currently re-reading The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. I haven’t read it in years and figured now would be the perfect time to give it another go!
I’m trying to quit drinking so many Frozen Hot Chocolates with a shot of espresso from my local coffee shop. they’re so good. The espresso makes the frozen hot chocolate a little bitter and nutty tasting!
June 22nd, 2009 at 8:07 pm
I’ve been dissatisfied with the books I’ve been reading (bad endings, hollow characters).
But, I too am about to try my hand at bread baking, though I’m giving it a more traditional try via The Tassajara Bread Book. The previous couple weeks have been devoted to cherry pies and this great italian cherry cake recipe — it’s been wonderful to have homemade baked goods.
June 22nd, 2009 at 8:21 pm
It’s been so much fun reading all of these comments!!!
Reading: Not much, unfortunately, though I typically read at least one Kathy Reichs books during the summer months.
Cooking/Baking: I haven’t had the chance to hit up our Farmer’s Market this summer, but am anxious to get down there and get some local veg! I CRAVE heirloom tomatoes, basil, olive oil, and bread and could eat it 2 meals a day! I’ve also been wanting to try some more recipes out of my Martha Stewart Baking Handbook. It’s a GREAT all-purpose baking book, and the recipes are delish!
June 22nd, 2009 at 8:56 pm
Hmmm..I just finished reading Monsters of Templeton by Lauren Groff, which I really enjoyed. Piled by the bed are Collected Stories of Gogol, Myths and Legends of Russia (Folio Society edition) and Rex Stout’s “The Broken Vase”, plus a collection of Mary Oliver’s poetry books for when I need a quick fix. As for cooking, I’m a total failure this month between travels and lack of forethought (kinda need some components in the house to cook with….)
June 22nd, 2009 at 9:40 pm
Yes, unabridged audio books count as reading. I’m a librarian, and I should know! I’ve been reading Lesile Miller’s book Let Me Eat Cake: A Celebration of Flour, Sugar, Butter, Eggs, Vanilla, Baking Powder, and a Pinch of Salt – Really good, and makes me want to bake cake – but it’s too hot…. Eating fresh fruit and veggies from the farmer’s market, and can hardly wait for the garden’s tomatoes.
June 22nd, 2009 at 9:50 pm
I’m still on a vampire kick from last summer, so I’m trying to get through all of Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse series. Pair that with an ice cold mojito and that’s a perfect summer day!
June 22nd, 2009 at 10:04 pm
The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo by Stieg Larsson was my latest read. Interesting because it’s set in Sweden and the the author is Swedish.
Food? Fresh Strawberry pie (remember Azar’s} and food on the grill.
My favorite sport using food in summer? Sailing and spitting cherry pits over the rail.
June 22nd, 2009 at 11:13 pm
I just picked up a book I’ve been eyeing for a while called “Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers”. It’s rather fascinating, if not a touch morbid.
I’m also reading “Yarn Harlot: The Secret Life of a Knitter”. Late? Yeah, but better late than never, right?
June 22nd, 2009 at 11:42 pm
This summer I’m reading all women – finishing up Jane Eyre and moving on to Wuthering Heights and then on to a beautiful biography of Beatrix Potter!
June 23rd, 2009 at 12:05 am
It’s nice to read whatever you feel like until you have to publically fess up. Oh well. I’m reading Anne Bishop’s Black Jewels Trilogy, again. There are a few things about the books that annoy me, but the characterization is great. I’m also planning on re-reading Stardust by Neil Gaiman.
I’ve been drinking margaritas of many lovely varieties as well as enjoying all the grilling that comes with the summer months. I love berry season; I made muffins with fresh blueberries for breakfast over the weekend, and my daughter has been eating all the blackberries she can get her little hands on.
June 23rd, 2009 at 12:45 am
I am reading *A Homemade Life* too! I’m also reading *The Whole World Over* by Julia Glass (I really liked her first book, *Three Junes*) and this month my local book club is discussing *Reading Lolita in Tehran” which certainly has made the news coming out of Iran more poignant, heartbreaking, hopeful and meaningful to me. I’m enjoying the Sookie Stackhouse mysteries as well. Also on my summer reading list is *The Story of Edward Sawtelle*. It’s getting so hot in Tucson that I’m eating a lot of salads. Also ice cream
. And I’m drinking a very non-serious, slightly fizzy and refreshing wine out of Portugal called Vinho Verde.
June 23rd, 2009 at 2:47 am
Well, 2 out of 3 of those cookbooks I own and love! And the bread one, I’ve gone back and forth over since I saw all those flickr photos too!
This summer, I have definitely been bitten by the cooking/baking bug again, and I’m hoping to rediscover so many of the fabulous cookbooks I own. My cookbook collection is a bit like my stash collection
And for fiction, right now the book is Little Face. I’ll keep you posted on if I’d recommend it or not
happy summer!!
June 23rd, 2009 at 4:47 am
It’s winter here, so it’s very much hot comfort food – I made my very first casserole last week, and I make my favourite soup almost every week – Ribollita – a lovely italian vegetable soup with pesto and garlic. And chocolate chip biscuits – at least one batch a week.
And I’m in the middle of reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies – hilarious!
June 23rd, 2009 at 6:19 am
Eee, I’ve got that book out from the library right now!
How cool is that? I’m reading several books at the moment, but most interesting are Money: A Memoir–about women, money, and emotions. It’s absolutely FASCINATING, and explains a lot about why we spend the way we do. Also Dolores Claiborne, which I read many years ago, but pretty much forgot the story. It’s quite the entertaining read.
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:50 am
Just finished, in one sitting, Here If You Need Me, by Kate Braestrup. Heart-breaking/heart-warming.
Made cinnamon raisin bread yesterday, yum! Also made Roasted tomato barley soup.
Happy summer!
June 23rd, 2009 at 8:07 am
So excited about a new Pat Conroy novel. Beach Music is my alltime favorite book. Thanks for the heads up. Just finished reading The Little Stranger and Loving Frank. Now I’m dying to visit Frank Lloyd Wright Homes when we go up north in July. Just picked up Cooks Illustrated Summer Entertaining Magazine. Awesome recipes. I want to make them all! Drinking lots of Savignon Blanc — It’s summer!
June 23rd, 2009 at 8:09 am
Hopefully eating lots of vegetables from the small garden my grands & I planted. Fun!! Although their expectations of “growth” were quite limited. Also going to start a new book (to me) called “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett recommended by a blogger. The new book by Pat Conroy sounds great and look forward to reading that. Hope my library has it quick. Walking early in the morning makes for more energy in the day and good for me too. Hope you have a wonderful summer.
June 23rd, 2009 at 8:15 am
Great contest! I just finished reading A Homemade Life and I loved it. I wanted to make every recipe.
I recently joined a CSA and I have been getting these beautiful Organic Strawberries as part of my fruit share. I have been making Strawberry Shortcake Cookies and Strawberry Jam scented with Vanilla. I can’t wait to see what fruits I get this week!
June 23rd, 2009 at 8:25 am
Oh fun! I’m with you on the bread-making for this summer, although I’ve been getting most of my recipes from allrecipes.com or foodgawker.com. So far we’ve tried French bread & pizza dough. Next up are bagels and soft pretzels.
Does homemade ice cream count as a drink? Maybe when it gets to the melted, pooled portion at the bottom of the bowl?
My summer reading list is dominated by the giant stack of pregnancy & birthing books. Exciting! I’m also slowly reading through a classics book list & have started Gargantuan & Pantagruel (sp). It’s from the 1500’s so I thought it would be dry – OMG it’s the bawdiest thing ever. More toilet humor than South Park! Also started the Buffy Comic Omnibus 7. Yes, I am that awesomely geeky.
What a fun contest – I’m enjoying reading everyone’s lists!
June 23rd, 2009 at 8:32 am
unfortunately, i’m not much of a drinker or a cook (or baker)! i’d love to learn how to make no-knead bread, though. i just read all four twilight books and also ordered the sookie stackhouse series (the books on which the HBO serires true blood are based). i love vampire stories
June 23rd, 2009 at 8:52 am
I’ve become a big fan of Jodi Picoult’s books. I started off the spring with “Songs of a Humpback Whale”, one chapter from finishing “Picture Perfect” and on to “Perfect Match”.. As far as cooking..well I’m doing that a lot these days (trying to cut out the fast food) but its mostly meal plan stuff… so nothing special. Although tonight’s dinner is Salmon with Asparagus salad and brown rice. yumm.
June 23rd, 2009 at 9:04 am
Reading – I’m plowing through the Twilight books and then will probably pick up some Jodi Picoult novels.
Cooking – I can’t wait to try the breadmaker and yogurt maker that we received for our wedding. Our plan is also to utilize the kitchen garden that we put in the backyard. That means super local blueberries, blackberries, tomatoes, peppers, watermelons and pumpkins. We’re going to be going through all of the recipes that we’ve torn out or folded over in magazines and pick one at the start of the day, grab the ingredients and go to town at night.
June 23rd, 2009 at 9:25 am
My 9 year old daughter was interested in reading the Twilight books (and since I had never read them and wasn’t sure if they were too old for her, I agreed to let her read them if we read them together. We are now on book #2.
I’m also knitting, of course. Currently on sweater #6 of my 12 sweater goal for 2009.
And I picked up that bread book also but have not yet had a chance to check it out. So, that’s in my plans as well!

I just finished Stephen King’s Lisey’s Story and now I’m reading Wally Lamb’s The Hour I First Believed. I’m also reading Wicked by Gregory Maguire and I finished up last week or so the sixth book in the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris.
I also want to get the book Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles by Cat Bordhi, but I don’t know if that counts as reading or knitting.
June 23rd, 2009 at 9:36 am
Oh, and as for cooking, the last two times I’ve cooked, I’ve set the stovetop on fire, so I’m not sure if I should be doing any cooking that’s more than the crockpot.
And I’m actually a pretty competent cook, believe it or not. I know how to make The Best Cheesecake In The World and even keep it from cracking in the middle.
June 23rd, 2009 at 10:08 am
I have to say, I’ve been going to Caribou a lot and getting a Cold Press with a shot of White Chocolate… sooooooo good, no creamer or sugar necessary.
I’ve been making homemade pasta salad with olives, pepperoni, feta cheese, red onions, pickles (really, weird, but super tasty) and Italian dressing.
And because I’ve had a hard last semester of heavy LITERATURE reading I’ve been catching up on the light side of life with books like:
To Catch a Highlander by Karen Hawkins
Casting Spells by Barbara Bretton
Paper Towns by John Green
Happy Summer && Happy Knitting!!
June 23rd, 2009 at 10:23 am
I’ve been preserving my harvest and cooking/canning lots of jams, spreads, and sauces. I’m reading “Three Cups of Tea”, and plan to read “A Homemade Life”.
June 23rd, 2009 at 10:24 am
Currently reading a biography of Henry VIII called Henry VIII: The King and His Court by Alison Weir. I just finished re-reading The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. As for cooking, I just got back from a camping trip and I had ‘hobbo’ dinners. Now that I’m however, we’re having homemade bolognese sauce with some red wine.
June 23rd, 2009 at 10:36 am
With knitting and cooking taking up almost all of my free time, I don’t get a lot of reading done. That being said, I have to read to go to sleep. Usually I can barely keep up with the current Newsweek. However, I am slowly working my way through Brisngr by Christoper Paolini and Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri. Since all my Indian friends adopted me, I’m also cooking Indian. Check out this link for an easy vegetable rice dish, Biryani: http://www.oregonlive.com/foodday/index.ssf/2008/06/recipe_detail.html?id=6835&search=Biryani& I skip the saffron, many Indians do too.
June 23rd, 2009 at 11:25 am
My summer reading has been suffering lately due to the amount of knitting I’ve been doing evenings and on my commute. I’m currently reading Tell Me, Pretting Maiden by Rhys Bowen. I’ve been eating lots of shrimp ceviche from costco, no TJ in Houston.
June 23rd, 2009 at 11:25 am
OH GOD. What am I NOT reading? I read such trash in my free time since I am generally reading high lit & heavy theory in my MA program. I also have a Kindle 2, and access to free ebooks, so this doesn’t encourage me to read anything other than potato chip books.
Currently, I’m reading “For A Few Demons More” by Kim Harrison. It’s the 5th book in The Hollow/Rachel Morgan series about a witch living in Ohio (of all places). It’s abnormally long for an urban fantasy novel. I have a few more books in the Rachel Morgan series to read after I finish this one.
I just finished the 4th book in the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs and I’m *dying* for more. Too bad I have to wait another year… same for the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews.
Noticing a trend here, lol? All kick ass heroines, all urban fantasy? What can I say, I love it!
I’m waiting until my brain is more relaxed to start reading Octavia Butler’s Xenogensis triology – better known as Lilith’s Brood.
Also on the to read list: The Sword of Truth series (if it ever comes out on Kindle, grr), The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, and a few others.
I’m also working on editing a paper for a conference, and brainstorming for my thesis. I may even start writing it! Who knows.
Cooking? I don’t cook. I BBQ a lot though!
Drinking? Lots of lemonade, iced tea, and water. It’s hot in California! I have some great cocktail recipes, too.
June 23rd, 2009 at 12:52 pm
I’m currently reading The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls – the author’s own story of her difficult childhood and how she managed to escape from it. As far as cooking goes – I’m not doing anything very interesting in that area. But the drinking . . . I just returned from a river cruise through the wine country in southern Germany and I’ve found a new love for the dry German riesling on hot summer days!
June 23rd, 2009 at 12:57 pm
I’m reading Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie as part of my book club, Ultra Metabolism by Dr. Mark Hyman as research to a healthier lifestyle, and I have a stack of books I’m looking forward to after that.
I’ve been baking a lot, making homemade ice cream, homemade pizza and I plan to drink a lot of cocktails. I’m growing heirloom tomatoes so I see a lot of caprese salads in my future!
I don’t have the book you’re giving away yet, but planned on buying it. I love to read about food! Thank you for the opportunity to win!
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:30 pm
I, too, will be reading Pat Conroy’s newest. I love all his novels. Right now, though, I am making my way through the embarassingly trashy “Twilight” series and I also just started “You or Someone Like You” by Chandler Burr. I heard it reviewed on NPR and it sounded really good.
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:48 pm
I sadly have not been reading much of anything lately. I’ve been spending most of my time working, accumulating yarn and knitting. Reading has sort of fallen by the wayside.
June 23rd, 2009 at 2:33 pm
Lately I haven’t had much time for recreational reading since knitting consumes so much of my free time but I have been devouring some new vegan cookbooks especially Vegan Brunch by Isa Chandra Moskowitz and I have just discovered the joy of vegan waffles. Definitely don’t think it is going to be good for my diet but they sure are tasty!
June 23rd, 2009 at 4:56 pm
I have to admit I haven’t done much reading this Summer yet apart from work. I’ve been meaning to pick up the Southern Vampire books though for some light reading the next time I go on a trip though.
For cooking, I’ve been trying to go to the farmer’s market and pick up lots of fresh ingredients, and do lots of baking using fruit. I made an awesome peach and custard tart a couple weeks ago, and have plans to make a stonefruit galette later this week!
June 23rd, 2009 at 6:27 pm
Reading: Run by Ann Patchett. Very engaging from the first page. Also reading Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson. Very dark. I am bothered by this story and have hope for a positive conclusion.
Eating: fish tacos. I could have variations of these every night!
Drinking: Ice water with a leaf of basil and a slice of lemon. Give it a try!
Loving: the thought of getting in one of your monthly lace clubs. I keep trying and trying…
June 23rd, 2009 at 6:59 pm
I’m in between books right now but I’m hoping
to pick up some Japanese craft books, Frankie magazine and some grapic novels in Seattle next week.
June 23rd, 2009 at 8:04 pm
I really haven’t had time for recreational reading, unless you count patterns. Speaking of eating, the last book I read was “Eat This Book” by Ryan Nerz. It’s not my typical read, but it was fast and fascinating in its own train wreck kind of way. I’ve gotten back into my summer foods that I make at home, which usually means Thai (yum woon sen) or Vietnamese (spring rolls). I’m looking forward to drinking more wine (dry gewurzt, dry muscat, and pinot noir), especially in making a big dent in the multitude of bottles I managed to acquire this spring
June 23rd, 2009 at 8:06 pm
I’m reading “My Sister’s Keeper” because I want to see the movie, and have a rule about reading the book first. In the last few weeks, I’ve not had much time for recreational reading, as I’ve started a summer class that has me reading fairy tales and feminist versions of fairy tales. It’s really quite fun, though!
June 23rd, 2009 at 9:02 pm
I’m trying to knit more, but I’ve been picking my way through a few books including Letters to my Daughter by Maya Angelou, The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran, and today I started An Adult Evening with Shel Silverstein by uh, well, Shel Silverstein. Once I finish up a couple projects, I have the whole Hitchhiker’s Guide series to read (I’ve only ever read the first) by Douglas Adams.
June 23rd, 2009 at 9:21 pm
Reading – well my daughter has been after me to read the Twilight Series, so I guess I’d better start. I’ve been reading really easy, summery novels (beach books). I just read “Firefly Lane” by Kristin Hannah.
Cooking – I’ve turned everyone in my office onto a great bean dip with three different types of beans, tomatoes, peppers, onions, and fresh cilantro – YUM!
June 23rd, 2009 at 9:51 pm
Have you read Julie and Julia yet? You’d love it I think. AND it will be a movie in theaters in August.
June 24th, 2009 at 6:41 am
Hi!
I am not yet reading, but every summer I spend some time reading Jane Austin’s books and Dune. That’s a fairly good descrption of me!
June 24th, 2009 at 8:11 am
i just finished The Anthropology of Turquoise by Ellen Meloy — one of the most moving books I’ve read in a long time.
June 24th, 2009 at 8:35 am
I’m loving spending as much time on the water as possible, kayaking (saw dolphins just a few days ago!). Every time we visit the coast, we buy a cooler full of fresh seafood – pan seared mahi, steamed shrimp, pan seared tuna – accompanied by simple sides made from fresh vegetables – my garden is starting to come in, and the Sungold tomatoes are divine!
June 24th, 2009 at 10:16 am
I’m mostly cooking this year. I can’t stop making chickpea salads. I got the idea from Orangette, actually- I use the Warm Chickpea Salad with Shallots recipe and make things up from there. Om nom nom.
June 24th, 2009 at 11:42 am
I’m reading pretty much everything I can get my hands on. I’m baking my way through Peter Reinhart’s The Bread Baker’s Apprentice. I’m loving fresh vegetables from my garden.
June 24th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
Here in stanking (not a typo!) hot Houston I’m reading Three Cups of Tea while enjoying a well-chilled vinho verde! It’s waaaaay too hot to cook!
June 24th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
Reading: I downloaded Twilight from our local library. I love audio books. (hands are free, I can still knit)
Drinking: Icy cold draught beer
Cooking: Grilled chicken breast with grilled pineapple slices and a Caesar salad. Yum!
Loving: my husband, he bought me a lovely lounge chair for the back deck so I can come home from work and have a snooze after a hard day at work
(a present for our 32nd anniversary)
June 24th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
I have just been to our library and found alot of new knitting books-score! I am reading alot of crime fiction these days ,many of them are written by the most benign looking English women. we eat alot of fresh fruit and veggies in the summer-so salads are a mainstay. Happy summer everyone!
June 24th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
We’re eating anything that can be grilled. Veggies are my favorite drizzled with a little olive oil. My favorite summer wine is RELAX Riesling. The best book so far has been Snow Flower and the Secret Fan.
June 24th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
I’m re-reading The Shack. Hugely moving and thought-provoking. Gotta love Pat Conroy…he’s on my summer list, too!
June 24th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
On the fun side, I just finished reading “Such a Pretty Fat” by Jen Lancaster, and on the more serious side, I’m halfway through each of “Hot, Flat and Crowded” by Thomas Friedman and “The Post-American World” by Fareed Zakaria. It’s too hot to cook, but I’ve been drinking some quite good bottled sangria that I found at Meijers – who woulda thunk?!
June 24th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
I just finished reading The Expected One and am knee deep in The Book Love. They are wonderful! Gives you something to think about while enjoying a well told story.
Cooking- It is starting to get hot so anything that will taste good cooked on a grill.
Have enjoyed your blog for a while now. Thank you for the smiles and good cheer!
June 24th, 2009 at 5:40 pm
So fun to get so many book suggestions!
Reading — alternating my non-fiction depending on my mood: The Nine, Born on a Blue Day, and The Fortune Cookie Chronicles
Drinking –lemonade (it’s been my June drink of choice)
Cooking — seriously, you don’t want me to : )
happy summer!
June 24th, 2009 at 5:45 pm
You always have the best contests! Reading through everyone’s comments gives me such good, summery ideas.
I’m alternating between eating through a huge batch of these veggie burgers (http://foodpluspolitics.com/2007/05/23/ultimate-veggie-burgers/) and summer salads. (My favorite salad right now has blueberries, smoked almonds, and a hard goat/sheep/cow’s milk cheese with a fig vinaigrette)
When I’m not too exhausted from work, bourbon slush is my favorite summery drink: http://southsideeating.blogspot.com/2009/05/because-its-somethin-somethin-weather.html. Unfortunately, there have been too many days recently when I’ve fallen asleep before finishing a glass!
And I’m reading my second book from the Maisie Dobbs series, which is a nice break from some more serious reading that I was doing this spring.
June 24th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
i’m reading pet-care books & knitting books at the moment. not cooking much ‘cuz it’s been too hot. so been making fav sandwich = whole wheat pita or double fiber bread + mayo + muenster cheese + fresh tomatoes + lettuce or broccoli sprouts. another no-cook fav = yoplait key lime pie yogurt with fresh strawberries, raspberries & blueberries + pecans. sometimes i’ll make a salad with blanched broccoli + avocado + pecans + a lemony dressing. YUMMY! drinking = usually margaritas.
however…at this time of year, i’m tripping down memory lane. spent my first 21 summers in a teeny tiny place in CT on the long island sound. reading consisted of buying books at the church book sale there, each kid claiming a rocking chair on the front porch & reading for hours. eating favs included fresh caught lobster or home-made new england clam chowder…after we went clamming. drinking…iced tea or lemonade (most of my years there were under-age…)
Happy summer…happy knitting!
June 24th, 2009 at 7:52 pm
I just finished reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and I think I’ll start re-reading Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to refresh my memory before the movie comes out.
June 24th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
Three cups of tea, yeah! have wanted to for so long!
June 24th, 2009 at 11:01 pm
The Painted Veil by W. Somerset Maugham
Saving Fish from Drowning by Amy Tan
June 25th, 2009 at 12:53 am
lately i’ve been having cravings for all things asparagus and henry the VIII.
for the last three nights (oh my poor husband) all i’ve wanted to eat was asparagus. my favorite dish by far has been the most simple.. saute some garlic in butter, throw in some chopped fresh asparagus, toss for about 10 mins on low heat, crank it up and throw on some shredded pre-cooked chicken. scoop it all up into a bowl, head out to the deck and soak up the evening breezes.
heaven.
also, i’ve been obsessed with the phillipa greggory tudor novels. they start with katherine of aragorn and nicely make their way down the chopping block.. eeerr.. history line. her novel ‘the other boleyn girl’ was very popular and indeed excellent, but my favorite book so far has been ‘the queens fool’. almost a side story following the life of a young girl who is brought to court for her gift of the ’sight’. it follows her story during the beginning of queen mary’s reign (and the terror of the inquisition) and ends after the first few years of elizabeth’s reign. this is the second time that i have read this series, and her version of the royal history continues to fascinate me. i would recommend these books to anyone who loves a good story, and doesn’t mind a little bit of (granted fictionalized) fascinating history on the side.
June 25th, 2009 at 9:00 am
I am reading The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Micheal Pollan, and the first book in the Baroque Cycle by Neil Stephenson. I swear I am going to read all three of these this summer. I just need to get started!
Eating lots of grilled shrimp on mixed greens with sliced avacado and bacon and goat cheese.
Drinking either greyhounds or rose’s.
June 25th, 2009 at 10:53 am
This summer I am reading an old classic by Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility. I am always working on the Bible, and I am browsing through a few old books about historic textiles. Summer is such a great time for sitting out on the porch and reading!
June 25th, 2009 at 10:56 am
I have been hooked on the Spellman family..The Spellman Files et all by Lisa Lutz
June 25th, 2009 at 11:04 am
I haven’t been reading much since my kiddo became mobile, but I sometimes listen to audiobooks while spinning (currently: The Book Thief; very enjoyable). She’s been sick lately so I started reading The Keys to the Kingdom, book 6. It’s a good kids’ book, and I think I will finish it and the latest Artemis Fowl book this summer.
June 25th, 2009 at 11:30 am
As of late, I have been making a lot of galettes (see here: http://smittenkitchen.com/2007/10/butternut-squash-and-caramelized-onion-galette/)– the base recipe is great, but you can also fill it with a variety of other things (like mushrooms!)
I just finished the end of the Night Watch series by Sergei Lukyanenko– I quite enjoyed the ending of the series, but was a little dissatisfied with the ending due to my own personal attachment to a particular character.
For those above talking about Tudor-related works, I highly recommend Allison Weir– she’s done a couple works of fiction recently, but I got started reading her Tudor biographies a long while ago, and they’re really engrossing.
June 25th, 2009 at 5:55 pm
Just finished Louise Penny’s first novel, Still Life. Must read novels in order. Thanks for the tip on the new Pat Collins novel. I visited Charleston for the first time in February. I loved it and can’t wait to go back!
June 25th, 2009 at 8:08 pm
Wow..I just bought “Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day” and plan to try some of the recipes this weekend. I am sooo happy I read your blog and found out about Pat Conroy’s new book. He is an all-time favorite of mine and I can’t wait to read this one. I just finished reading “Nineteen Minutes” by Jodi Picoult and next in line is Ernest Hemingway’s “Moveable Feast”.

June 25th, 2009 at 11:59 pm
As always I am in the opposite season so I am eating lots of homemade bread (no breadmaker just aggression) , lots of stews and tagines and reading “An Arsonists Guide to Writers’ Homes in New England ” by Brock Clarke . A very funny read indeed . Enjoy your summer guys.
June 26th, 2009 at 7:05 am
I’m reading the Stookie Stackhouse series too and also have some non-fiction I’m hoping to get to later this summer.
June 26th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
Reading….haven’t decided what to bring along as my summer reading as yet – 2 weeks at the end of the month is when I will get my summer reading in…I think I need to read all of the comments here to figure out what I need to bring to the cottage at the end of the month.
Baking – I have that Artisan Bread in 5 minutes book – its fabulous – I just need to try a few more receipes…..in addition, with summer time and cottaging, comes the need to make German Streusel Kuchen as taught to me by one of my dad’s aunts – it just isn’t a cottage vacation without 3 or 4 flats of this delicious cake.
Salads- have a bunch of salad in the garden that will soon need to be picked – there is nothing better than freshly picked romaine with homemade Caesar salad dressing (my son says I make the best in the world – he says so…so it must be true!!!!
Cherries are ripening…need to do some picking this weekend and next…..
Knitting is never far from my mind – trying to figure out what the next project will be and with which yarn? Just started to get into the Plucky yarns – so I am trying to find the perfect project for my cashsilk that I have and the lace club yarn that is to come….
As for what/who I’m loving….it has to be my hubby and my twin boys – they are the light of my life and I can’t imagine my world without them.
June 26th, 2009 at 3:18 pm
it is sad, but true- i am reading debbie macombers summer on blossom street. i have plans to read julie and julia next (prep for the movie!) and firefly lane is on it’s way from a friend. i am eating lots and lots of strawberries this week and always in summer tomatoes, summer squash, and pestos and guacamole. ok, i am eating a lot. and hello, ice cream! i am drinking white wine with raspberries floating in it, bonus if it is a sparkling prosecco. and i am loving the sun!
June 27th, 2009 at 10:08 am
I am really getting into my reading this summer and have been enjoying a combination of new books that I haven’t read and old faves that I always return to. So, I’ve read the entire Twilight series, reread “Truth and Beauty” by Ann Patchett, and am now reading “Do they hear you when you cry” by Fauziya Kassindja, Layli Miller Bashir. Looking at that list, I have definitely defaulted to some more serious reads and think that the next book I pick up should be more in the Twilight vein.
Drinking: hard cider and white wine…Perfect for the warm summer days!
Eating: caprese salad, anything grilled
Hope you’re having a great summer!
June 27th, 2009 at 10:09 am
Eating: salmon burgers
Drinking: peach tea
Reading: The Shack, an amazing book that’s really challenged me spiritually. I usually try to limit myself to one book at a time but last week my 7 year old son wanted to go to the library (an opportunity not to be squandered!) and I couldn’t resist picking up the 2008 installment of Best American Short Stories. I love that those compilations let you digest solid, meaty stories in 20-30 minutes, which is great when your day is punctuated by a little one who wants you to watch something great he can do, help him find a lost something or other, or needs you to take him somewhere.
June 27th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
I just started reading Rare Earth: Why Complex Life Is Uncommon in the Universe. It’s due back at the library on Monday, so I’ll have to get through it this weekend if I’m going to.
I haven’t been cooking very much for the past week or so because I’ve been working and there are other people at home to cook, but I did make granola the other evening.
It’s been cool here, so I’ve been drinking a lot of tea.
June 28th, 2009 at 7:45 am
Lemonade! I’m on a mission to try all the lemonade recipes I’ve accumulated in the quest for the ‘perfect one’! I’d like to read some of the classics this summer. I just finished The Diaries of Adam and Eve by Mark Twain. Easy, fun read. Rhubarb! I have an abundance of rhubarb – trying out some new rhubarb pie recipes and of course using some of the ‘old standbys’ too.
June 28th, 2009 at 9:51 am
My 85 yr-old Aunt suggested Twilight. Even though I don’t think I’ll like it, I love that she does and will give it a try! Lots of light summer reading and knitting in the A/C.
June 28th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
It’s been over 100 degrees every day for seemingly ever in central Texas. Mexican beer with lime hits the spot. Not much new with the diet. Reading Wendy Johnson’s new sock book.
