What’s in your cup? ~
By Sarah | March 28, 2009

It seems I collect the most random things on my desk and, more often than not, completely by accident. Periodically, I’ll stop and see what has accumulated. Some of these things make sense…. others, well, not so much. For instance, why do I have a dog bone (albeit an un-chewed, brand new dog bone) in my coffee cup?
So, what collects in your cup? Granted, not everyone uses a coffee mug, but what collects on your desk, your side table, your bag?
Leave me a note and let me know…… It’s been a while since we’ve had a contest. Let’s make this one extra fun. I’m going to randomly choose three (yes 3!!!) winners from the comments.
Happy Saturday!

okay…I have boring useful things–pencils, pens, some handcream from L’Occitane–and less boring useless things: a Virgin of Guadalupe toenail clipper that has never been used (what can I say, I live on the Mexican-American Border and went through a kitsch phrase); a pair of green dice; a couple of nails found on a railroad track; shells from the Sea of Cortez; a old vintage pin that says “Be Faithful;” three messages from Chinese fortune cookies and and a little ethnic drawstring bag with a tiny brass Ganesha in it.

My mug is a flower pot filled to the brim, two screw drivers, two pairs of scissors one you cannot use, nail clippers, Kit Kat candy, three crochet hooks and three pairs of dpn, pattern for slippers and mints at the bottom, nail file, and odds and ends at the bottom that has been there forever

Oh goodness, I see hand lotion, about three different lipglosses, a calculator (gotta know the yardage for that new kick ass yarn!), a small tape measure, and some miscellaneous pens (some work, seems like most don’t – don’t ask me why!!) Thanks for asking – maybe I’ll go test those pens and get rid of the ones that don’t work – or maybe I’ll just go knit – yeah, definitely go knit LOL!!

Let me see…which cup do I want to report on? Okay, the nearest one. 2 MarksALots, 2 highlighters (yellow and orange; a screwdriver; a tire air gauge; a 3-inch piece of chalk; a blue map-color pencil; an empty container for pencil lead refills (need to trash that); and an old dog vaccination tag. And a paper clip! Need that!

I just brought home 8 dpns that accumulated in my pen holder. There’s still some chopsticks (if I need to eat and don’t have any silverware), a scissors (which actually belongs there), and some mechanical pencils with no more lead in them. Overall it’s pretty organized!

The obvious pens, markers, a stray crayon or two, a bone folder, a book of stamps that is from several years ago so it will take more than just one of them to mail a letter, page marker sized post-it notes, a screwdriver, scissors, a granola bar in a flavor no one cares for, lipbalm, small hair ribbons and elastics for my 4 yo’s hair, and clothes pins. Several oldfashioned, spring loaded clothes pins. I use them on everything.

My bag always has my wallet, phone, sanitary alcohol, hand cream and lip balm. But it always gets filled with junk. More specifically, kid junk. Crayons, stickers, hair clips, Batman weapons, lolly pops, doll combs, Lego, dress-up rings and bracelets. No matter how often I empty it, it fills back up again.

I have rocks, nuts, photos, postcards, a small basket of yarn, rulers, and other knicknacks!

Cooking magazines collect on my desk. I also collect pencils there. I love pencils especially funky ones.

I’ve got no cup on my desk, but I do have a small pile: 3 photos of my boys, a moo card from a friend, my glasses, a client check, a ball band (Jamieson’s Shetland heather), and my phone’s head set. Hope you’re enjoying Spring Break!

My cup has: not enough pencils for an accountant during tax season; 0 pens (all stolen by my children); 2 wite out correction pens; cute little wooden painted guy I got in 1st grade for getting a good report card (he never leaves the cup);and a drink stirer from Guana Cay, Abaco, Bahamas, 20 years old reminding me of my other life (not better, just other)

What’s in my desk mug?
Pens. Medium point blue pens (for when I’m making lists – I prefer a bolder stroke). Fine point blue pens (for when I’m writing notes).
Hand sanitizer (Bath & Body Works Nectarine and Mint scent).
Granola bars (Quaker Oatmeal to Go).
A screw (liberated from my husband’s tool box and confiscated from my 3 year old when I saw it nearly going into a light socket).
this is fun! I’m enjoying reading the other comments!
Hope you had a great getaway!

A mini American flag, lotion, white-out, lip balm (my fave avalon organics vitamin C), a few pens, and a yellow highligher (the only color I’ll use)
Hope you’re having fun!

I have a really hard time throwing balls bands, so every ball band from every skein of yarn I’ve used over the last 9 months is all stuck in the basket I use as a desk catch-all. Surprisingly (or maybe not) there isn’t a single working pen actually IN the basket. Lots of DPNs though…

Keys….always the keys because I am so afraid of losing them. Lip balm, id, atm card, and cash. If I put anything else with those items, it will just confuse me when I stop at my desk before heading out the door. ha ha

in my cup itself, just a variety of plastic utensils. but around that on my desk, i seem to keep accumulating little piles of spare change, post-it notes, lip balm, paperclips and pens.

I have a small set of wood and wicker drawers that I keep my knitting stuff in and on top of it I have a painted stone/rock with googly eyes and a feather for hair, stuck on which is named, erm, Rocky (I know it is so silly but it cracks me up every time I think of it)which my dear granddaughter gave to me – we share the same silly sense of humour and when her school pal was selling these rocks for charity she ran all the way home to give it to me as she knew I would love it as we are soulmates – She also gave me a little yellow rubber smiley man that makes me smile every day and then there is my wool winder and a desk tidy with all my knitting/crochet accoutrements in it and my favourite pens. My laptop is infront of me on a small table the type you eat a tv meal on, I have a stash of good wool under the coffee table and my husband sitting in an armchair to my left and a bookcase is to the left of him with our all time favourite books on – Im surrounded by everything I love; what more could I wish for? Ahh, God is good – as my dear Grandfather used to say and even though we are both now disabled we still feel blessed!Reading all these lovely knitting blogs and finding out what everyone is doing every day gives me such a lift because I think that where there is creativity there is a loving heart.

Hmmm, let me see. A pen, chapstick, scissors, pins and a small tube of hand cream.
