5 Degrees ~

By | January 15, 2009

If I can get some good lighting today I’ll see about getting a picture of the cowl laid out flat (No problem Carrie).

Any soft and squishy aran or worsted weight yarn will do (I used TPK Aran Cashmere, colorway: Doris). You may be surprised to know, but I keep next to none of my yarn…. with all the nasty weather and lack of sun I wanted something bright. So, I thought it time to swipe a few skeins for me (shhh – don’t tell Mr. Plucky).

With yarn held double, cast on 73 stitches (I got approximately 3” per inch on a size 17 needle) and knit until I ran out of yarn. It’s a little over 10” inches from cast on to cast off edge.

Knit the first five rows. Next row – yo, k2tog, end with a k1. Knit another 3 rows and then the yo, k2tog, end k1 row again. Alternated these rows for the duration of the knit (I’m wearing it doubled around my neck. In my opinion, a cowl can’t be tight enough – especially when it’s FIVE degrees outside!).

Warm and drapey and just the ticket for this time of year. And speedy. Very speedy. From cast-on to cast-off was less than 2 hours. And, truth be told, even though I love to wear scarves (and wear them all the time I do) there are many things I’d rather knit besides a scarf. So, this fits the bill perfectly.

It’s similar to some neck warmers I knit last winter, but really, they are just so functional, fun, fast and cozy. What’s not to like?

In other news – It’s official, I will be a vendor at Madison Knitters Guild on Saturday, March 14th. I’m thrilled (and slightly overwhelmed, but that is a story for another day). If you will be attending, please be sure to stop by and say Hi – I’d love to meet you!

The price I pay for having him help me with pictures. Ah well, he’s very entertaining.

Ooooh. Yummy! Can’t wait for my 2 skeins of Doris! I thought she was very cheery too! Stay warm!! Looks like it is quite c-c-cold in your neck of the woods!!!

What warm, cozy and cheerful looking cowl! Have fun in Madison — it’s my favorite place I’ve ever lived. Lakeside Fibers is well worth checking out, since they have a lovely coffeeshop right on Lake Monona, with a great view.

It’s gorgeous. I just realized something though – you’re wearing it like a cowl, so I just assumed it was. But you don’t mention joining in the pattern to knit in the round. Is it a cowl, or a scarf? The pattern looks so beautiful, I hope you can get a flat shot so I can see the detail! Thanks!
